The Heartstone

The Soul That Chose to Stay

At the center of every Fleshforged rests a Heartstone: a living crystalline core that serves as the anchor of their existence.

To outsiders, a Heartstone resembles an impossibly beautiful gemstone suspended within a lattice of sacred craftsmanship. To the Fleshforged, however, it is far more than a power source. It is memory, identity, emotion, and will made tangible.

A Fleshforged does not possess a beating heart of flesh and blood. Instead, the Heartstone performs that role in its own mysterious way, drawing ambient aether from the world and refining it into the energies that sustain thought, sensation, movement, and life itself.

No two Heartstones are ever identical.

Each develops unique internal patterns, colors, inclusions, and crystalline structures throughout its lifetime. Artisans often compare them to living fingerprints—physical records of experiences, relationships, triumphs, heartbreaks, and personal growth. Older Fleshforged often possess Heartstones whose interiors have become breathtaking labyrinths of light and color, shaped by centuries of accumulated memories.

The origins of the first Heartstones remain one of the great mysteries of Erosia.

Some claim they were gifts from the gods. Others insist they are fragments of the Veil itself crystallized into physical form. A few Fleshforged philosophers believe every Heartstone contains the echo of a soul that willingly chose a second life.

Whatever their true nature, one truth remains undeniable:

A Fleshforged is not animated by machinery.

They are animated by personhood.

The Heartstone does not merely provide energy. It houses the unique spark that makes a Fleshforged who they are.

When a Fleshforged experiences joy, grief, devotion, love, curiosity, or wonder, those experiences leave subtle impressions upon the Heartstone. Over time the crystal becomes a living archive of a life fully lived.

For this reason, Heartstones are regarded with profound reverence. They are protected within reinforced chest cavities and sacred body structures designed specifically to shield them from harm. While damage to a Heartstone is rare, it is considered one of the gravest injuries a Fleshforged can suffer.

Many cultures view the Heartstone as proof that life cannot be reduced to flesh, blood, or biology alone. The Fleshforged themselves often describe it more simply:

“The body is what we were given. The Heartstone is who we became.”
