Wildheart — Path of the Gentle Beast

The beast bares its teeth because something behind it is worth protecting.

Lore Overview

Not every awakened instinct says chase.

Some say guard.

Wildhearts of the Gentle Beast understand Ferocity as the ancient instinct to stand between danger and the vulnerable. Their strength is not softened by tenderness; tenderness gives that strength direction. A Gentle Beast notices when a companion’s breathing changes, when someone falters behind the line or when fear enters a familiar voice. Their body begins moving before conscious thought catches up.

These Wildhearts are common among caravan guardians, village wardens, communal hunters and Beastkin cultures where survival has always depended upon the strength of the group rather than the glory of one warrior. Their rites often involve vigils, shared burdens, protective circles and oaths made without words.

For a Gentle Beast, Arousal represents protective urgency. Libido represents the endurance required to carry another’s burden without collapsing beneath it. Climax is a protective release: the instant accumulated urgency expands outward and the entire pack moves beneath the shelter of one instinct.

Packward Instinct

3rd-Level Path of the Gentle Beast Feature

Your Rage sharpens the instinct to place yourself where danger is greatest. When you enter Rage, choose a number of willing creatures you can see within 30 feet equal to your Proficiency Bonus. These creatures become your Packmates until your Rage ends. While raging, you may use a Bonus Action to replace one Packmate with another willing creature you can see within 30 feet. When a Packmate within 15 feet is targeted by an attack from a creature you can see, you may use your Reaction and expend 1 Ferocity to move up to half your Speed toward that Packmate. This movement does not provoke opportunity attacks.

If you end this movement within 5 feet of the Packmate before the attack is resolved, the triggering attack is made with Disadvantage.

If the attack still hits, reduce its damage to the Packmate by an amount equal to your Proficiency Bonus.

Veiled Play. Once per round, you may gain 1 Arousal instead of expending Ferocity to use Packward Instinct.

Unveiled Play. If you use Arousal to fuel Packward Instinct while you are already at 4 or more Arousal, increase the damage reduction from the feature by your Constitution modifier.

If gaining Arousal through this feature causes you to Climax, resolve Packward Instinct and the triggering attack before resolving your Climax.

Shoulder the Burden

6th-Level Path of the Gentle Beast Feature

You learn one of the oldest lessons of the pack: pain carried together does not fall upon the same shoulders. While raging, when a Packmate within 10 feet takes damage, you may take some of that damage in their place. Reduce the damage dealt to the Packmate by an amount of your choice, up to your Wildheart level. You then take damage equal to the amount prevented. Damage you take through Shoulder the Burden:

  • Is the same damage type as the triggering damage.
  • Cannot be reduced, resisted, prevented or redirected.
  • Is treated as damage from the original hostile source for the purpose of Awakening Ferocity.

You may use Shoulder the Burden only once per round.

Veiled Play. The first time each round you use Shoulder the Burden, you may gain 1 Arousal. If you do, gain Temporary Hit Points equal to your Proficiency Bonus after resolving the transferred damage.

Unveiled Play. Once per round, when a willing Packmate within 10 feet would gain Arousal, you may spend 1 Libido.

If you do, reduce the Arousal that Packmate gains by 1, and you gain 1 Arousal instead. If the Packmate would gain only 1 Arousal, it gains none.

Heart of the Herd

10th-Level Path of the Gentle Beast Feature

Protective instinct no longer feels like a reaction. Your Ferocity begins anticipating what the pack will need. When an attack made with Disadvantage because of your Packward Instinct misses, you regain the Ferocity spent to activate Packward Instinct. You cannot exceed your Ferocity maximum. In addition, once on each of your turns when you gain Temporary Hit Points from Iron Hide or another Wildheart feature, choose one Packmate within 15 feet. That Packmate gains Temporary Hit Points equal to your Proficiency Bonus.

Veiled Play. A Packmate that gains Temporary Hit Points from Heart of the Herd may reduce its Arousal by 1.

A creature can reduce Arousal through this feature only once per round.

Unveiled Play. When a Packmate within 15 feet Climaxes, you may immediately move up to 10 feet toward that Packmate without provoking opportunity attacks and regain 1 expended Ferocity.

You may benefit from another creature’s Climax through Heart of the Herd only once per round.

Guardian Beast Unbound

14th-Level Path of the Gentle Beast Feature

Your protective instinct becomes absolute. To reach those behind you, danger must first pass through you. Once each round while raging, you may use Packward Instinct without expending Ferocity. In addition, once during each Rage, when a Packmate you can see within 30 feet would be reduced to 0 hit points by damage, you may use your Reaction and expend 2 Ferocity. You immediately move up to your Speed toward that Packmate without provoking opportunity attacks. If you can end this movement within 5 feet of the Packmate, the Packmate is reduced to 1 hit point instead of 0, and you take damage equal to your Wildheart level.

This damage cannot be reduced or prevented. If you cannot reach a space within 5 feet of the Packmate, the feature fails and the Ferocity is not expended.

Veiled Play. Whenever you Climax while raging, each of your Packmates within 30 feet gains Temporary Hit Points equal to your Wildheart level. Each affected Packmate may also immediately move up to half its Speed without provoking opportunity attacks.

Unveiled Play. After resolving the normal Arousal reset caused by your Climax, choose one willing Packmate within 30 feet that has at least 1 Arousal.

That Packmate may reduce its Arousal by 1. If it does, you gain 1 Arousal. This transfer represents the Gentle Beast immediately taking up part of the pack’s remaining pressure even in the aftermath of their own release.

Deity Alignment

Gentle Beasts often resonate with Aratheia, whose worship teaches that strength becomes meaningful when it sustains another life. Many also honor Ulvexa through the protective instincts of pack, herd and den, or Velyssara through the conviction that life and desire are worth defending. No divine allegiance is required to walk the path.
