Independent charter company · Amarosa and coastal routes
Freewake handles awkward commissions that major houses decline: a scholar with fragile specimens, passengers needing a discreet departure, a stranded family or an estate recovered from a flooded coastal shrine. Its aim is enough dependable income to remain independent of exclusive merchant contracts.
Moral character: Neutral with a humane streak. Individual members may disagree with their organization’s conduct.
Leadership & control
Managing captain Ilyra Fen is an older Tideborn woman who dislikes creditors more than storms. Working shareholders elect the captain after each sailing season; crew can halt a departure over seaworthiness through a recorded vote. Ilyra wants to purchase a second vessel but hides how close the first is to forfeiture.
Faith & moral tensions
The company keeps a small shared shrine with room for travelers’ offerings. Faith earns no priority over another passenger’s safety. Ilyra believes the gods are real and still expects a hull to be inspected. Discretion is a service; knowingly transporting captives or stolen identities violates its charter.
Resources & membership
Passage, salvage contracts and specialist freight pay wages. Freewake recruits navigators, cooks, porters and interpreters as readily as fighters. The Meridian Exchange provides credit; the company cannot afford to alienate it casually. A reserve purse covers a crew member’s return home.
Daily life & internal tensions
Guests share stew under a drying canopy while cargo is weighed beside them. The return-home purse makes loyalty tangible. A junior shareholder wants to accept profitable undeclared relic cargo, arguing that big houses conceal worse. Ilyra’s debt makes refusal increasingly difficult.
Allies, rivals & shared pressures
- The Meridian Exchange — Credit keeps a vessel afloat and gives its lenders a voice in the next commission.
- The Saltpetal Pilots — Safe passages depend on the pilots’ local knowledge.
- The Broken Seal — A forged export record can turn an ordinary freight contract into a criminal dispute.

Adventure seed
Freewake accepts a sealed chest from the Bloomseekers and later learns that the accompanying export certificate is forged. The owner demands delivery, the harbor demands seizure, and the Broken Seal offers a quiet sale. The party can establish provenance, arrange lawful custody or choose whom to betray; opening the chest is not the only way forward.
