Before Gods, There Were Mothers
Every culture in Erosia tells a different story about the beginning of creation.
Some speak of an endless sea of darkness. Others describe a universe waiting in silent stillness before the first breath of life. Countless myths disagree about the birth of the gods, the shaping of the world, and the rise of the first civilizations.
Yet among these countless stories, one truth appears with remarkable consistency.
Before the gods, there were the Three Mothers.
No temple claims to have created them.
No scripture records their birth.
No scholar has discovered a beginning to their existence.
They simply are.
Older Than Creation
Unlike the gods, the Three Mothers are not worshiped because they grant miracles, answer prayers, or intervene in the affairs of mortals.
Their influence is far greater than that.
Most philosophers describe the Three Mothers as the foundations upon which creation itself was established. They did not merely shape the world; they made a world capable of existing. Long before kingdoms, stars, or even the first deities emerged, the Three Mothers had already woven the fundamental principles that allow reality to endure.
Because of this, many theologians argue that the gods are not separate from the Mothers but are themselves children of the reality the Mothers created.
Whether this is literally true or simply a poetic interpretation remains one of the oldest debates in Erosian theology.
The First Mystery
No surviving text agrees on the names, appearances, or intentions of the Three Mothers.
Some ancient traditions refuse to name them altogether, believing that no mortal language can accurately describe beings who existed before creation itself.
Others portray them as wise women gathered around the first loom, weaving existence from invisible threads.
Still others claim they are not beings at all, but eternal principles that mortals can only comprehend by imagining them as mothers.
Every tradition offers a different image.
None claim certainty.
For this reason, the Three Mothers are often called the First Mystery, representing the oldest unanswered question in all of Erosian history.
Mothers of Every Faith
One of the most remarkable aspects of the Three Mothers is that nearly every religion acknowledges them in some form.
Even faiths that disagree on the origins of the gods often recognize that something older than divinity gave rise to creation itself. Priests may debate theology for decades, yet many begin from this common foundation.
This shared reverence has made the Three Mothers one of the few concepts capable of uniting otherwise competing religions. A priest of Velyssara, a devotee of Serakhiel, and a scholar devoted to no deity at all may disagree about nearly everything, yet each can stand beneath the night sky and acknowledge the ancient mystery from which all existence began.
Their Legacy
Although the Three Mothers no longer walk openly among the world—if they ever did—their presence continues to shape Erosia.
Their influence echoes through the heavens, where the Three Moons trace their endless paths across the night sky.
It lingers within the oldest myths, the oldest rituals, and the oldest questions ever asked by philosophers and priests.
Even the study of magic ultimately leads back to them, for every attempt to understand reality eventually reaches the same unanswered beginning.
Who were the Three Mothers?
No one knows.
Why did they create the world?
No one can say.
Perhaps those questions were never meant to have simple answers.
Perhaps the search itself is part of the gift they left behind.
For as long as mortals continue to seek knowledge, wonder, and understanding, the First Mystery endures.
