Jack O’Rapture — The Midnight Harvester

When the moon is brightest and the harvest is ripe, whisper your desire into the darkness. If the earth begins to tremble, your invitation has been heard.

Origin and Reported Legend

Some Autumn Vigil storytellers whisper of a visitor who cannot be found by hunting him. They call him Jack O’Rapture, the Grinning Gentleman, the Lord of the Midnight Patch and the Moon-Called Harvester. According to the tale, a willing adult may summon him beneath a brilliant full moon by lighting a carved pumpkin, offering sweet wine and honey to the earth, and speaking an invitation. The patch stirs; roots rise; a great carved face begins to glow.

The figure described in these accounts is a towering body of blackened roots, living vines, autumn leaves and ripened pumpkin flesh. His enormous lantern head bears fiery eyes, jagged teeth, a theatrical grin and a long, prehensile tongue. Witnesses disagree whether he is a malicious cryptid, a bargaining harvest spirit or a wandering manifestation of a forgotten rite. He is not established as an avatar, servant or creation of any deity.

Jack reportedly prefers being invited to stalking travelers. He is courtly, mischievous and evasive about the exact future he cultivates beneath the soil. His harvest involves supernatural essence offered through a consequential bargain, not a power automatically stolen from any nearby emotion or Climax. The stories warn that a glowing blossom-mark sometimes remains afterward.

Region and First Signs

Reported habitat: Hidden pumpkin patches, abandoned autumn orchards and secluded gardens where Autumn Vigil lanterns have been lit. No single settlement or authenticated sighting is established.

  • Pumpkins glow from within without a wick or fire.
  • Pumpkin blossoms open in soil too cold for germination.
  • Dark roots move beneath otherwise undisturbed ground.
  • An old carving is found marked with honey, wine and an invitation.
  • Several adults report similar golden blossom-marks or dreams of a luminous patch.

Three-Moon context: Erosia’s Azure, Pearl and Crimson Moons follow different cycles. Jack’s legend speaks of the brightest full moon, but the draft does not claim that a specific named moon or a Great Conjunction is mandatory.

Pantheon and Autumn Vigil

The legend invites comparison with Talyss, the Root Mother, whose autumn teachings concern germination, fruit, preservation and allowing growth to rest. Her faith also rejects claims upon another person’s body or fertility. This thematic association is not proof of patronage; Jack’s origin remains contested.

The public Autumn Vigil honors what is gathered, what must be released and what is saved for the next season. Jack’s proposed rite is a private, localized folktale—not a universal Erosian festival custom.

The Rite of the Bright Harvest — Recovered Account

An anonymous fragment describes a lantern carved from a ripe pumpkin; a small offering of honey and sweet wine poured upon open soil; bare feet or an equivalent gesture of greeting; a freely spoken desire; and a kiss placed upon the illuminated gourd. The seeker remains under the moonlight to await a response. This is a discoverable artifact for the table, not a script obliging the characters to carry out the rite.

The documented Harvest Covenant takes 10 minutes, outside combat, with an informed willing adult beneath an appropriately bright full moon. Seasonal bounty, a consequential promise or a voluntarily chosen private intimate exchange can produce a Harvest Charge. Any intimate scene may be veiled. Participating in the rite does not itself agree to botanical transformation; a seed-bond requires separate, informed acceptance.

Traits

Rooted Regeneration. Jack regains 5 hit points at the beginning of his turn while touching natural soil. This trait does not function if he has taken fire damage since the end of his previous turn. He cannot regenerate while at 0 hit points.

Lord of the Patch. Jack ignores difficult terrain created by nonmagical vegetation and has advantage on checks or saving throws against being forcibly moved while touching the earth.

Bound by Invitation. Jack cannot use his Harvest Covenant on an unwilling creature. Abilities that create combat-related magical pressure do not count as accepted ritual invitations.

Actions

Multiattack. Jack makes two Root Claw attacks and one Tongue Lash attack.

Root Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (2d8 + 5) slashing damage.

Tongue Lash. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (2d8 + 5) bludgeoning damage. The target is grappled (escape DC 16) if Large or smaller. Jack can grapple only one creature with his tongue at a time. This is a physical combat action, not an intimate interaction.

Moonvine Command (Recharge 5–6). Twisting roots erupt in a 20-foot-radius area centered on a point of earth within 60 feet. Creatures Jack chooses in the area make a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw, taking 18 (4d8) bludgeoning damage and falling prone on a failure, or half damage without falling prone on a success. The area becomes difficult terrain until the end of Jack’s next turn.

Bonus Action — Harvest Invitation (3/Day)

Jack offers one creature within 30 feet an encounter with his supernatural attention. The target makes a DC 15 EROSave, choosing Constitution or Wisdom. On success, it is unaffected. The target may willingly fail after the immediate mechanical result has been explained. This magical pressure cannot create attraction or consent.

Play modeFailed save
Classic PlayThe target cannot take reactions until the beginning of its next turn.
Veiled Play — Gazette revisionThe target gains 1 cumulative Arousal. Becoming Overwhelmed never automatically resets Arousal or triggers release.
Unveiled PlayThe target gains 1 Arousal under the published 0–6 Arousal Track and normal limits.

In Unveiled Play, Jack also gains 1 Arousal when he uses this ability, and he may gain Arousal from this and his other special traits only once per round. In this Gazette’s revised Veiled implementation, each qualifying Harvest Invitation likewise adds 1 Arousal to Jack’s accumulating pressure.

Ritual Feature — Harvest Covenant

An informed, willing adult may enter Jack’s 10-minute moonlit rite outside combat. Seasonal bounty, a consequential promise or a voluntarily chosen private intimate exchange generates 1 Harvest Charge, to a maximum of 3. Charges belong to Jack’s harvest and are not automatically Whispers. They may empower manifestations or support the optional Ripening Track; they never bypass its consent and transformation requirements.

Libido: 6 · Starting Arousal: 0 · Desire DC: 15 · Cycle: Harvest → Ripening → Great Rapture.

Arousal Trigger — Ripening Hunger. In Unveiled Play, Jack gains 1 Arousal once per round when his Tongue Lash hits or he uses Harvest Invitation. This reflects his own supernatural intensity, not the target’s willingness.

Climax Effect — The Great Rapture. Upon reaching Arousal 6, Jack’s pumpkin heart ignites. Chosen creatures within 20 feet make a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw, taking 18 (4d8) radiant damage on a failure or half on a success. Living plants in the area immediately blossom, and Jack may end one grapple or restraint caused by his vines. Afterward, Jack loses 1 Libido, resets Arousal to 0 and applies Depletion normally.

Veiled Play — Gazette revision. A qualifying Harvest Invitation adds 1 cumulative Arousal to the affected target, and adds 1 to Jack where his special rule says so. Being described as Overwhelmed does not automatically cause Great Rapture, remove a Desire condition or reset Arousal. Great Rapture occurs only at its defined Climax trigger.

Classic Play. Jack may trigger Great Rapture once per day as an action without tracking Desire.

Related Cryptid — The Pistil-Bound

Also called the Bloom-Consorts or Daughters of the Midnight Patch. The Pistil-Bound are mature adult women whose living essence has joined a supernatural botanical pattern. This is not pregnancy and not conventional bite-spread lycanthropy. In botanical form, pumpkin blossoms grow through vine-like hair, amber light glows in the eyes, barklike patterns trace the skin and roots temporarily spread from the feet when channeling patch magic.

They retain their memories, relationships and personal autonomy. Some voluntarily remain with Jack, others leave or oppose his intentions. Their transformation alone does not determine loyalty; neither Jack nor another Pistil-Bound can treat an accepted rite as ownership.

Traits

Botanical Shapechanger. As an action, the Pistil-Bound changes between her original humanoid appearance and botanical form. Her statistics and hit points remain the same. Equipment does not automatically transform unless magical equipment specifically permits it.

Shared Roots. While within 30 feet of an allied creature willingly cooperating with her, the Pistil-Bound deals an additional 3 (1d6) psychic damage with one Thorn Talon attack per turn.

Daughter of the Patch. The Pistil-Bound knows the direction of the nearest patch to which she has willingly bonded, provided it lies within 1 mile. She can end this attunement during a long rest.

Actions

Multiattack. The Pistil-Bound makes two Thorn Talon attacks.

Thorn Talon. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (1d8 + 3) slashing damage.

Pollen Veil (Recharge 5–6). The Pistil-Bound exhales luminous pollen in a 15-foot cone. Chosen creatures make a DC 13 EROSave using Constitution or Wisdom. On a failure, a target takes 10 (3d6) psychic damage and cannot take reactions until the start of its next turn. On success, it takes half damage and suffers no other effect.

Bonus Action — Bloom-Song (2/Day)

Choose one willing creature within 30 feet. Flowering roots briefly connect the creatures, restoring 12 (2d8 + 3) hit points to the target.

Classic: No additional Desire effect. Veiled — revised: The Pistil-Bound gains 1 Arousal. Unveiled: The Pistil-Bound gains 1 Arousal.

Reaction — Root Interpose

When an allied creature within 10 feet takes damage from an attack, the Pistil-Bound extends a protective vine and reduces that damage by 7 (1d8 + 3), minimum 0.

Classic: Damage reduction only. Veiled — revised: The Pistil-Bound gains 1 Arousal. Unveiled: The Pistil-Bound gains 1 Arousal. She can gain Arousal from her own special traits no more than once per round.

Libido: 4 · Starting Arousal: 0 · Desire DC: 13 · Cycle: Germination → Blooming → Release.

Arousal Identity — Shared Quickening. The Pistil-Bound experiences Arousal as magical vitality accumulating in her botanical form. Her restorative and protective acts feed this pressure.

Climax Effect — Pistil Bloom. Upon reaching Arousal 6, her blossoms open in a radiant burst. She chooses any number of willing allies within 15 feet; each gains 8 temporary hit points. For 1 minute, a 15-foot-radius area of flowering roots centered on her location at the moment of release becomes difficult terrain for her enemies. The roots remain there if she moves and do not restrain creatures. She loses 1 Libido, resets Arousal to 0 and applies Depletion normally.

Veiled Play — Gazette revision. Each qualifying Bloom-Song, Root Interpose or other explicit Arousal-generating effect adds 1 cumulative Arousal, subject to frequency limits. Becoming Overwhelmed does not automatically trigger Pistil Bloom or reset Arousal. Pistil Bloom resolves only at the stated Climax threshold.

Classic Play. The Pistil-Bound may use Pistil Bloom once per day as an action without tracking Desire.

Alternate Ending — The Seed Takes Root

The legendary seed-mark can progress through three optional transformation stages, but an encounter with Jack does not automatically impose them. Advancement requires separately informed acceptance of the botanical seed-bond at a qualifying moonlit rite; failed EROSaves, combat attacks, unwilling exposure and ordinary Climax cannot advance it.

StageSigns
I — Lantern-MarkedGolden blossom sigil, vivid seasonal dreams and increased awareness of the patch.
II — BuddingSubtle botanical features; heightened sensitivity to roots and moonlit growth.
III — Pistil-BoundFull botanical shapechanging and the newly awakened Pistil-Bound Desire Cycle.

An Intelligence (Arcana or Nature) check, DC 15, can reveal the mark’s botanical properties and potential development. A failure still reveals that this is supernatural alteration, not pregnancy. Before Stage III, remove curse ends the mark. At Stage III, greater restoration restores the original form at the subject’s request. An alternative unbinding rite requires three successful DC 15 checks using Nature, Arcana or Religion; setbacks require time rather than further change.

If at least three transformed adults voluntarily remain together in Jack’s service, they may establish a Midnight Court. Its purpose is left open for the DM: sanctuary, botanical propagation, defensive sisterhood, supernatural political faction or the first sign of something greater. This is a possible continuation, not predetermined future canon.

Running the Myth at the Table

  • Investigate: Find the manuscript, compare accounts and determine whether there is a real entity beneath the patch.
  • Observe: Witness a willing adult’s summoning from a respectful distance; no player character need participate.
  • Negotiate: Jack is more likely to bargain than attack. An informed refusal is not hostility.
  • Resist or fight: Regeneration favors Jack on living soil; the Pistil-Bound defend allies through healing and protective roots.
  • Leave: The garden continues its own seasonal rhythm. Later manifestations are optional adventure seeds, not punishments for player boundaries.

Rules and Consent Review

Gazette-specific mechanical variance: The current public Mechanics of Desire defines Veiled Play primarily through Composed, Stirred and Overwhelmed. This experimental After-Dark bestiary entry instead uses explicitly cumulative +1 Arousal results for its Veiled abilities, as instructed in the creature drafts. An Overwhelmed state never itself triggers a reset; only the defined Climax trigger does. Do not combine incompatible modes or double-count an effect.

Full Unveiled Play follows the existing Arousal stages, Libido, Climax, Depletion and optional Rhythm of Desire. EROSaves use Constitution or Wisdom unless the ability says otherwise. Arousal and Climax do not automatically generate Whispers. Player authority over intimate content, lasting character feelings and consent always remains intact.

Morvane’s Field Notes — Editorial Commentary

This case belongs in the unverified catalogue because its central questions remain open: does a creature called Jack exist; are the harvest marks truly related; and do the Pistil-Bound represent botanical kinship, voluntary devotion or an unrelated magical lineage? A field chronicler should compare evidence without announcing an explanation too early. These are editorial prompts, not recovered words or authenticated claims from Morvane Kaestra.
