“I cannot make them love you. I can make sure you finally arrive where the answer can be given.”

Heartbroker

Heartbrokers are promoted Devils most often associated with crimson resonance: desire, longing, yearning and the ache of possibility held just beyond reach. They are not seducers by default, and their contracts do not require sexual fulfillment; a Heartbroker may bargain over romance, ambition, artistic recognition, reunion, belonging, freedom or any other desire powerful enough to alter a life when it is finally pursued.

Most Heartbrokers began as Red Imps that learned a crucial infernal lesson: frustrated desire feeds manifestation, but fulfilled desire can produce cleaner and more consequential resonance when a contract is written well. Their danger lies in competence. A Heartbroker is often at its strongest when it helps a mortal reach exactly what they asked for.

Promotion Through Longing

A Red Imp does not become a Heartbroker simply by aging. Promotion requires accumulated compatible Whispers, usually gathered through bargains that repeatedly transform longing into action. Imps that learn to create opportunities, remove obstacles and bring mortals to consequential choices begin to develop the poised, attentive presence associated with Heartbrokers.

Promotion changes more than size. A Heartbroker becomes unusually sensitive to the difference between what a person says they want and what actually gives their desire emotional weight; this does not grant perfect mind-reading, but it makes them patient negotiators who rarely waste a contract on a wish too shallow to matter.

Appearance and Bearing

Heartbrokers retain unmistakably infernal anatomy: horns, fangs, clawed hands and feet, wings and a long tail remain common, though their bodies become taller and more composed than those of Imps. Crimson, rose, wine and ember tones predominate, with luminous lines of resonance sometimes appearing beneath the skin when a nearby desire becomes emotionally charged.

Their clothing usually improves as their understanding of mortals deepens. Rather than imitating garments at random, they favor ceremonial sashes, layered silk, contract cords, rings and small tokens received from fulfilled bargains; these objects are status markers rather than trophies of ownership.

Contracts of Possibility

A Heartbroker normally promises access, courage, timing, introduction, protection or some other condition that makes a desired outcome possible. It cannot make another creature reciprocate affection, consent to intimacy, surrender autonomy or become emotionally obligated merely because the bargainer wants that result.

The strongest Heartbroker contracts define fulfillment around the bargainer’s own consequential act: speaking the confession, entering the competition, leaving the harmful household, presenting the work, asking the question or stepping through the door that fear had kept closed. The resulting Pathos-Toll is usually crimson because the emotional consequence comes from desire becoming action.

Traits

Emotion-Born. Effects that detect fiends identify this creature as a devil. It is not part of demon, Gelkin or Chrysalis metamorphosis. Native color identifies sustaining resonance: Red—desire; Green—envy; Blue—sorrow; Orange—rage; Black—grief. Color does not prescribe alignment.

Opportunity Reader. After observing a creature for 1 minute, the devil has advantage on its next Wisdom (Insight) check concerning that creature. It does not learn private thoughts.

Actions

Multiattack. The devil makes two Rosehook attacks. It cannot replace these attacks with Open the Door.

Rosehook. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 10 (2d6 + 3) slashing damage plus 3 (1d6) psychic damage.

Open the Door (Recharge 5–6). Choose one creature the devil can see within 30 feet. A target must be able to hear the devil. Use only the version for the table’s chosen mode. This action cannot make a creature confess, accept a bargain or fulfill a contract.

  • Classic Play. Each target makes a DC 14 Wisdom saving throw. On a failure, it takes 14 (4d6) psychic damage and it cannot take reactions until the start of its next turn. On a success, it takes half as much damage and suffers no additional effect.
  • Veiled Rules. Each target makes a DC 14 EROSave. On a failure, it takes 14 (4d6) psychic damage and becomes Stirred by this devil for 1 minute. This Stirred state persists after the usual affected ability check. At the end of each of its turns, the target repeats the save, ending this state on a success. If already Stirred by this action, a failed save against a new use instead makes it Overwhelmed: it cannot take reactions until the start of its next turn, then its Desire condition ends. On a successful initial save, it takes half damage and does not change Desire state. This target culmination does not trigger the devil’s own Possibility Bloom.
  • Unveiled Rules. Each target makes a DC 14 EROSave. On a failure, it takes 14 (4d6) psychic damage and gains 1 Arousal. On a success, it takes half damage and gains no Arousal. Its own Climax follows its own effects, not the devil’s Possibility Bloom.

Bonus Actions

Measured Withdrawal. The devil takes the Disengage action.

Reactions

Missed Opportunity. When a creature within 30 feet misses the devil with an attack, the devil may move up to 10 feet without provoking opportunity attacks.

Mechanics of Desire

Longing Under Pressure. Arousal expresses the emotional pressure described in this entry, rather than necessarily sexual excitement. Use the Mechanics of Desire for the chosen mode; the modes are alternatives.

  • Classic Play. Track neither Arousal nor Libido. Use the Classic version of Open the Door; ignore Deepen the Hook, Resonant Appetite and Possibility Bloom.
  • Veiled Rules. Track Composed, Stirred and Overwhelmed; do not track Libido. When the devil itself becomes Overwhelmed, resolve Possibility Bloom once and end its Desire condition. If another effect also supplies a culmination effect, use this creature’s named release instead of stacking two releases.
  • Unveiled Rules. The devil begins with maximum Libido 5 and Arousal 0 unless the encounter establishes otherwise. Its Desire DC is 14. On reaching Arousal 6, resolve Possibility Bloom as its creature-specific Climax Effect, reduce Libido by 1 (minimum 0), and reset Arousal to 0. At Libido 0, apply normal Depletion and Exhaustion rules; it cannot spend Libido it lacks. A long rest restores its maximum Libido and resets Arousal to 0. No short-rest recovery is granted by this stat block.

Desire Traits

Deepen the Hook (Unveiled Only). Once on each of its turns, when a target fails an EROSave against Open the Door, the devil may spend 1 Libido to give that target 1 additional Arousal. This respects the normal maximum of 3 Arousal gained during one turn and the Arousal 6 ceiling.

Resonant Appetite (Unveiled Only). Once per round, when another creature within 30 feet Climaxes because Arousal gained from this devil’s effect brings it to 6, the devil regains 1 spent Libido, never above 5. This does not create or collect a Whisper.

Possibility Bloom

One willing creature the devil can see within 30 feet may immediately move up to half its speed without provoking opportunity attacks and interact with one unattended object. The recipient chooses its destination and may decline.

Whispers and Pathos-Tolls. Arousal is pressure, not consent; Climax is release, not contractual fulfillment. No ability in this stat block generates a Whisper through damage, a failed saving throw or release alone. Collection requires the actual fulfillment and collection clauses of a valid bargain. Whispers are emotional resonance, not souls, memories or automatic ownership of their source. Custody of an entrusted Confidence grants no right to read, sell or consume it.

Using Heartbrokers in Play

A Heartbroker can be ally, patron, tempter, rival or antagonist without changing its infernal nature. The most unsettling versions are not liars but professionals who understand exactly where longing becomes leverage; a desperate mortal may leave the bargain genuinely better off while the Devil grows stronger from the consequence.

Heartbrokers work particularly well in social adventures because refusing them does not automatically make them enemies. They may return later with a better offer, recommend another Devil whose resonance fits the problem more closely or quietly observe whether the mortal finally acts without infernal assistance.

Tactics and Encounter Use

Open with Open the Door, then use Rosehook while keeping an escape route. It offers a meeting or introduction as a service; other parties remain free to decline.

Contract Scope. Before using a bargain, record the service, willing parties, fulfillment condition, compatible Pathos-Toll, collection method and any agreed breach remedy. Promised services require the devil’s actual resources, contacts or separately established magic; this stat block grants no unlimited wish, compelled affection or automatic resurrection.

Kaestra Catalogue Note

“Heartbrokers are dangerous because they are often correct about one thing: wanting is easier than acting. Never confuse the fact that a Devil opened the door with proof that walking through it was a mistake.” — Morvane Kaestra
