Aurex Dawncrown, the Once and Future Oath

Champion Profile

Class Reflection: Oathsworn
Mortal Class: Oathsworn 20
Sacred Oath: Oath of the Open Heart
Legendary Seed: King Arthur
Erosian Race: Dracari
Cultural Lineage: Rosegold
Alignment: Lawful Good
Unique Relic: Dawnstar

A promise becomes holy when you choose to bear its cost.

Dawnstar — The Broken Oathblade

Dawnstar is the surviving hilt of the legendary sword Aurex carried in mortal life. The blade itself is gone. In its present state, Dawnstar is not a functional weapon and cannot be wielded as a sword.

In Aurex’s lifetime, the completed weapon represented the fullest expression of his sacred authority. Its legend draws from the same heroic tradition as Excalibur. For Aurex’s mortal character build, the completed Dawnstar uses the 2014 Holy Avenger as its mechanical baseline wherever an Erosian-specific Dawnstar rule does not supersede it.

The relic’s incompleteness helps explain why an Invoker cannot immediately draw upon the whole of Aurex’s legend. Aurex remains complete, but Dawnstar no longer provides the physical conduit through which every part of that legend once moved.

Aurex’s Unfinished Oath

Aurex asks a worthy bearer for something greater than victory: discover what became of Dawnstar’s missing blade and restore the weapon that once completed his oath. Whether restoration would allow Aurex to move beyond the relic, release the Living Legend, or fulfill some final promise remains part of the Champion’s unresolved story.

Restoring Dawnstar is a campaign achievement rather than a normal class-level unlock. Until that story is completed, the relic remains a hilt and cannot provide the completed weapon’s Holy Avenger functions.

Aurex in Mortal Life

Aurex did not die as an unfinished novice waiting for a future Invoker to complete him. He died as a fully realized 20th-level Oathsworn of the Open Heart. The Living Legend preserves that completed heroic identity. Champion Access determines how much of that identity an Invoker can carry across the Veil.

20 (+5)10 (+0)14 (+2)8 (-1)12 (+1)18 (+4)

Saving Throws: Wisdom +7, Charisma +10. While Aurex is conscious, his Aura of Protection also adds +4 to his own saving throws and to those of allies within range.

Skills: Athletics +11, History +5, Insight +7, Intimidation +10, Persuasion +10.

Dracari and Rosegold Abilities

  • Darkvision: 60 feet.
  • Draconic Resistance: Fire resistance.
  • Breath of the Chosen Flame: Aurex chose a 30-foot line of fire. At mortal level 20 its save DC is 16 and its damage is 1d10 + 6 fire, usable six times per long rest.
  • Ancient Appetite: Intimidation proficiency.
  • Mortal Longing: Once per long rest, Aurex can reroll a failed saving throw against being charmed or frightened.
  • Rosegold Lineage: Persuasion proficiency. Once per long rest, Aurex can grant himself advantage on a Persuasion check made to establish trust, negotiate peace, or honor an oath.

Oathsworn Mastery

Aurex’s mortal Oathsworn features include a 100-point Lay on Hands pool, Protection Fighting Style, Divine Smite, Extra Attack, Aura of Protection, Aura of Courage, Improved Divine Smite, Purifying Touch, Aura Improvements, all six Sacred Seals, 20 Warrant Uses, and Paragon of Fidelity.

  • Judgment: Radiant Verdict.
  • Mercy: Healing Promise.
  • Sanctuary: Shelter the Vulnerable.
  • Challenge: Stand and Answer.
  • Binding: Stay the Hand.
  • Absolution: Peace Restored.

At 20th level, Paragon of Fidelity allows Aurex to regain a Warrant Use when initiative begins with none remaining, issue the first Sacred Warrant on each of his turns without spending a Warrant Use, regain a spent Warrant Use after Vindication, and apply Seal Mastery to every Sacred Seal he possesses.

Oath of the Open Heart

Aurex’s Sacred Oath is built around willing fellowship rather than solitary authority. In mortal life he possessed:

  • Circle of Trust
  • Channel Divinity: Stand Beside Me
  • Channel Divinity: A Place to Speak, Mercy
  • Warrant: You Need Not Carry It Alone, Shared Breath, No One Stands Alone, and the 20th-level capstone Sanctuary of Unhidden Hearts.

At Aurex’s full mortal strength, Circle of Trust can include up to six willing companions. Stand Beside Me grants 24 temporary hit points before its movement and Desire effects are resolved. No One Stands Alone restores 2d8 + 4 hit points. Sanctuary of Unhidden Hearts represents the perfected expression of Aurex’s belief that authority exists to make room for others to stand beside you.

Prepared Spell Suite

Aurex prepares 14 Oathsworn spells. Where Erosia has not replaced a spell, use its 2014 Fifth Edition version.

  • 1st level: Bless, Command, Cure Wounds, Protection from Evil and Good.
  • 2nd level: Aid, Lesser Restoration, Zone of Truth.
  • 3rd level: Aura of Vitality, Dispel Magic, Revivify.
  • 4th level: Aura of Purity, Death Ward.
  • 5th level: Circle of Power, Dispel Evil and Good.

His mortal spell slots are 4 first-level, 3 second-level, 3 third-level, 3 fourth-level, and 2 fifth-level slots.

The Living Legend

Noble, restrained, inspiring, burdened by expectations, deeply loyal to chosen companions, and sometimes slow to recognize fractures inside his own circle. Aurex remembers the whole person he was, including every skill above. The Invoker does not restore forgotten abilities to him. The Invoker learns how to carry them.

Battlefield Identity

Protection, judgment, leadership, radiant offense, defensive auras, shared burdens, and battlefield authority. Aurex is strongest when protecting a group that has chosen to stand together.

Manifestation

A fully draconic spectral sovereign crowned in dawnlight, with radiant script and oath-seals igniting across scaled armor and wings of light. Dawnstar appears in his hand only as its surviving hilt; a blade of memory may flare around it during specific accessible abilities, but the relic does not become a restored physical weapon.

Trust-Bond and Alignment Resonance

Aurex values fidelity, just authority, mercy, responsibility, voluntary fellowship, and promises kept at personal cost. He responds strongly when an Invoker protects a companion without claiming ownership over them, accepts help instead of hoarding every burden, keeps difficult promises, honors another person’s free choice, or places themselves between danger and someone vulnerable.

Dissonance grows when an Invoker breaks promises for convenience, demands loyalty without earning it, dominates companions, abandons those they freely swore to protect, or treats Aurex as a weapon rather than a person. Aurex can refuse a use of his legend that directly violates these values.

Champion Access — Aurex’s Legendary Memory

Aurex does not gain abilities as the Invoker levels. The complete ability library above already belongs to him. At each Champion Access milestone, the Invoker chooses one Legendary Memory from the options available at that milestone or any earlier milestone. You cannot choose the same memory more than once.

When you gain a new Champion Access milestone, you may also replace one Legendary Memory you previously chose with another memory you are now eligible to choose. This allows two Invokers carrying Aurex in different eras to draw upon different parts of the same hero.

Unless a memory says otherwise, it functions only while Aurex is manifested and uses your Invoker ability DC and Champion attack modifier when a save or attack is required. Choosing a memory means Aurex normally consents to that expression of his legend. He may still refuse its use when the requested action directly violates his values, as described by the core Champion rules.

Initial Champion Access

Available at 1st Invoker level. Choose one.

  • Breath of the Dawn Dragon. As part of directing Aurex with your action, he can exhale a 30-foot line of fire. Creatures in the line make a Dexterity save against your Invoker ability DC, taking 1d10 + your Proficiency Bonus fire damage on a failure or half as much on a success. You can use this memory a number of times equal to your Proficiency Bonus per long rest.
  • Dragon’s Endurance. Aurex’s fire resistance applies before fire damage dealt to the manifested Champion is transferred to you through Life-Bound Conduit.
  • Mortal Longing. While mentally connected to Aurex, when you fail a saving throw against being charmed or frightened, you may reroll it. Once you use this memory, you cannot use it again until you finish a long rest.
  • Rosegold Accord. Once per long rest, when you make a Charisma (Persuasion) check to establish trust, negotiate peace, or honor an oath, Aurex may advise you through the bond and grant advantage on the check. This memory does not require Aurex to be manifested.

Deepened Champion Access

Available at 5th Invoker level. Choose one memory from this list or an earlier list.

  • Stand and Answer. Once during each manifestation, as a bonus action, choose a hostile creature within 30 feet of Aurex that can see or hear him. The creature makes a Wisdom save against your Invoker ability DC. On a failure, it cannot willingly move farther from Aurex until the start of your next turn.
  • Stay the Hand. Once during each manifestation when Aurex hits a creature, you may force that creature to make a Strength save against your Invoker ability DC. On a failure, its Speed becomes 0 until the start of your next turn.
  • Peace Restored. Once during each manifestation, Aurex can use the Magic action to touch a willing creature and end either the Charmed or Frightened condition affecting it.
  • Circle of Trust. At the end of a short or long rest, choose up to your Proficiency Bonus willing creatures you can touch. Until your next long rest, when one of those companions within 30 feet of Aurex fails a saving throw, you may use your reaction to add 1d4 to the result, potentially turning failure into success. You can do so a number of times equal to your Proficiency Bonus per long rest.
  • Lesser Spell Memory. Choose one 1st- or 2nd-level spell from Aurex’s prepared spell suite. While Aurex is manifested, you may have him cast that spell once without expending a spell slot. You regain this use after a long rest.

Greater Champion Access

Available at 9th Invoker level. Choose one memory from this list or an earlier list.

  • Aura of Protection. While Aurex is manifested and conscious, you and friendly creatures within 10 feet of him gain a +4 bonus to saving throws.
  • Aura of Courage. While Aurex is manifested and conscious, you and friendly creatures within 10 feet of him cannot be frightened.
  • Stand Beside Me. Once per long rest while Aurex is manifested, use a Magic action to choose yourself and up to your Proficiency Bonus willing creatures within 30 feet of Aurex. Each gains temporary hit points equal to your Invoker level + your Constitution modifier and may immediately move up to 10 feet without provoking opportunity attacks.
  • A Place to Speak. Once per long rest while Aurex is manifested, use a Magic action to create a 10-foot aura around him for 1 minute. Willing creatures in the aura have advantage on saving throws against being charmed, and a willing creature that starts its turn there may move 5 feet that turn without provoking opportunity attacks.
  • Greater Spell Memory. Choose one 3rd-level spell from Aurex’s prepared spell suite. While Aurex is manifested, you may have him cast that spell once without expending a spell slot. You regain this use after a long rest.

Legendary Champion Access

Available at 13th Invoker level. Choose one memory from this list or an earlier list.

  • Improved Divine Smite. Once on each of your turns when Aurex hits with a melee attack, the attack deals an additional 1d8 radiant damage.
  • Purifying Touch. Once per long rest while Aurex is manifested, use a Magic action to have him touch a willing creature and end one spell affecting it. The spell’s level can be no higher than one-half your Invoker level, rounded down.
  • No One Stands Alone. Once per long rest while Aurex is manifested, as a bonus action choose one creature from your Circle of Trust within 30 feet of Aurex. That creature regains 2d8 + 4 hit points. If you also know Circle of Trust, its reaction die becomes a d6.
  • Shelter the Vulnerable. Once during each manifestation, when a creature Aurex can see within 10 feet of him takes damage, use your reaction to reduce that damage by 1d6 + 4.
  • High Spell Memory. Choose one 4th-level spell from Aurex’s prepared spell suite. While Aurex is manifested, you may have him cast that spell once without expending a spell slot. You regain this use after a long rest.

Perfect Champion Access

Available at 17th Invoker level. Choose one memory from this list or an earlier list.

  • Aura Improvements. If you know Aurex’s Aura of Protection, Aura of Courage, or both, the range of each aura you know increases to 30 feet.
  • Sanctuary of Unhidden Hearts. Once per long rest while Aurex is manifested, use a bonus action to awaken his perfected Open Heart for 1 minute. You and willing companions within 30 feet of Aurex gain resistance to psychic damage. When the manifestation begins, each such companion may immediately move up to half its Speed without provoking opportunity attacks. If you know Circle of Trust, once on each of your turns you may apply its failed-save benefit to a companion without using your reaction or expending one of its uses.
  • Paragon of Fidelity. Once on each of your turns while Aurex is manifested, you may use one Legendary Memory derived from one of his Sacred Warrants without consuming that memory’s once-per-manifestation use. A given Warrant memory can still be resolved only once on the same turn.
  • Supreme Spell Memory. Choose one 5th-level spell from Aurex’s prepared spell suite. While Aurex is manifested, you may have him cast that spell once without expending a spell slot. You regain this use after a long rest.

Veiled Play — Resonant Fellowship

When an Aurex Legendary Memory causes you to protect a willing companion, restore a companion, keep a difficult promise at meaningful cost, or accept a burden a companion would otherwise bear, the GM may identify that act as a moment of strong Alignment Resonance. If a feature specifically tells you to gain Arousal, gain 1 Arousal and continue from your current total; never set the character to a named Arousal state.

Unveiled Play — Shared Burden

Aurex’s accessible Open Heart memories may interact with Arousal and Libido exactly where their individual rules state that they do. Spending Libido represents the Invoker’s endurance being used to sustain another person through the bond. These effects remain voluntary for affected companions and never allow Aurex or the Invoker to override another creature’s consent.

Legend Unbound — The Crown Without End

In mortal life, Aurex knew the perfected expression of his Open Heart as Sanctuary of Unhidden Hearts. History remembers that moment more grandly as The Crown Without End: not a crown of rulership, but the invisible circle formed whenever people freely choose to stand beside one another. When the Invoker’s Climax triggers Aurex’s Legend Unbound while he is manifested, the Champion briefly expresses a portion of that perfected sanctuary even if the Invoker has not selected Sanctuary of Unhidden Hearts as a Legendary Memory. For the duration defined by the Invoker class, Aurex and willing allies within 30 feet gain resistance to psychic damage, and each willing ally in the area may immediately move up to 10 feet without provoking opportunity attacks.

Veiled Play. The first time during The Crown Without End that the Invoker or a willing ally within 30 feet resolves Climax, one willing ally within 30 feet may reduce Arousal by 1 and move 10 feet without provoking opportunity attacks.

Unveiled Play. The first time during The Crown Without End that the Invoker or a willing ally within 30 feet resolves Climax, that creature regains 1 Libido lost to that Climax, up to its normal maximum. This does not remove Exhaustion or other consequences already applied.

If Dawnstar Is Restored

Restoring Dawnstar is intentionally outside normal Champion Access progression. If the missing blade is recovered and the weapon is made whole, the completed artifact may once again use the 2014 Holy Avenger as its mechanical baseline when wielded by Aurex through manifestation, subject to the GM’s campaign and the final resolution of Aurex’s unfinished oath.

Restoration should change the story before it changes the numbers. Completing Dawnstar may allow Aurex to fulfill the final promise holding his legend to the relic, transform the nature of the bond, or finally choose whether to remain with the Invoker or pass beyond the Veil.
