Description
Touch an unattended nonmagical object no larger than a door. You hear a single clearly audible sentence spoken within 5 feet of it during the previous hour, chosen by the DM from speech actually recorded by the object’s surroundings. The spell cannot recover whispers too faint to have been audible, speech protected by divination-blocking magic, or speech that never occurred. If no sentence qualifies, you learn that nothing was found.
At Higher Levels. The lookback period increases by one hour for each slot above 2nd.
Velvet Court Devotion. Eshthara. Eshthara’s whispered-will rituals teach that the imagination can reconstruct a voice, but no magically recovered sentence should be mistaken for an infallible memory.
Devotional Rite. As you hear the recovered line, you may ask the spell to replay it in a dreamlike neutral voice instead of its original speaker’s voice. You give up clues about identity or accent but retain the words.
- Veiled Effects. You may choose to hear the sentence in the voice of an anonymous narrator rather than in the original speaker’s voice; this removes clues about voice identity but not the wording.
- Unveiled Effects. If the sentence genuinely reveals an unresolved danger or a hidden fact you are investigating, you may gain 1 Arousal after hearing it. If you do, you may ask whether the speaker was within 5 feet of the object at the beginning or end of the sentence; the DM answers truthfully if discernible. This gain is limited to once per casting.
