Circle of Rut
The stag lifts its antlers beneath the changing moon. The wolf answers the migration road. Rut is the season when life insists on movement, daring, and becoming. Its Keepers honor instinct without surrendering judgment, wearing wild forms as solemn agreements with the lives around them.

Lore Overview
Preserved in older teachings as the Circle of Rutt, this tradition understands desire as a season of the living body. Its Keepers attend mating seasons, fertility ceremonies, courtship displays, territorial contests, chosen pair-bonds, and the shelter of a communal nest. Hunger, attraction, rivalry, and grief-longing each demand understanding; none grants authority over another person.
Rut is more than a hunter’s pursuit. It is the heat before a contest, the courage to make a courtship offering, the need to guard a nesting place, and the discipline to let an intense season pass. Keepers serve as fertility wardens, herbalists, mediators of pack disputes, and guides for those whose instincts have awakened out of rhythm. No rite guarantees conception or requires intimacy.
Mother Sablehare, the ancient Lapinari matriarch preserved in the legacy tradition, offers a natural mentor for these Keepers. The Quickening and the Amber-Musk Glade provide places to put her lessons into practice: recognize the pressure, understand its source, and choose its expression. Scent, posture, and magical resonance provide clues, never infallible knowledge of another person’s desires.
A mobile shapeshifting striker and scout. Its desire identity is seasonal urgency: choosing rising Arousal while pursuing danger, spending Libido to sustain momentum, and turning Rebirth into a change of pace rather than a loss of self.
A Verdant Keeper Circle for Second Bloom Edition. Features arrive at Verdant Keeper levels 2, 6, 10, and 14. PB means proficiency bonus. Your Circle save DC equals 8 + PB + your Wisdom modifier. References to Wisdom modifiers have a minimum value of 1.
You help communities understand restless seasons, protect migrating animals, and distinguish instinct from entitlement. Wild Shape changes physical form, not personal values or consent. Seasonal imagery never compels mating or other behavior.

At the listed Verdant Keeper levels, these spells are always prepared, count as Verdant Keeper spells for you, and do not count against your prepared-spell total. Cast them using your normal spell slots and components. They grant no additional slots or casting while in Wild Shape. A spell’s charm or control never establishes consent to intimacy.

Playing This Circle
Standard: Use each feature’s ordinary rules. Veiled: Add its Veiled rules if your table tracks Arousal. Unveiled: Add its Unveiled rules if your table uses Libido. Optional effects never replace an ordinary feature unless expressly stated. You cannot spend more Libido than you possess; at 0 Libido you cannot benefit from Advanced effects until a long rest, even if another effect later restores Libido.
Rebirth and recovery: Rebirth is this class’s name for Climax, not a separate event. At 6 Arousal, resolve the canonical event: reset Arousal to 0, regain 1d6 hit points, gain one level of exhaustion, and lose 1 Libido, to a minimum of 0. Circle effects occur after that resolution unless expressly stated otherwise. They do not remove its costs. Ordinary exhaustion rules govern recovery; these Circles introduce no separate Spent condition.
Seeds: A Seed is the living focus of these rites. Carrying or planting an ordinary seed is narrative expression, not an additional currency. These features grant no undefined Seed enhancements or additional Seed supply. Their listed Libido costs are their complete Advanced costs. Use the base class’s separate Seed rules only where those rules are fully defined.
Agency: Arousal and Rebirth may represent mystical resonance, seasonal instinct, or emotional release. No feature establishes attraction, sexual consent, fertility, or a reproductive obligation. Willing creatures may decline optional effects. Arousal is never a substitute for a listed control condition.
Answer the Season
2nd-Level Circle of Rut Feature
You can enter Wild Shape as a bonus action. Your maximum beast CR becomes 1; all other base-class restrictions, including swimming and flying restrictions, remain. At level 6, your maximum CR becomes your Verdant Keeper level divided by 3, rounded down. This replaces only the base class’s maximum CR. Instinct Surge. When you enter Wild Shape, you may awaken seasonal heat for 1 minute, ending early when that Wild Shape ends. You can awaken this surge PB times per long rest. While it lasts, your walking speed increases by 10 feet and you have advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks relying on smell or hearing. Once on each of your turns while in Wild Shape, after moving at least 20 feet on your turn, you may add your Wisdom modifier to the damage of one beast-form melee attack that hits; this last benefit does not require an active surge.
Veiled Play. After that attack resolves, you may gain 1 Arousal, at most once per turn. If you had at least 3 Arousal before the attack, you may instead use the bonus damage to move up to 10 feet without provoking opportunity attacks. You cannot receive both the bonus damage and that movement from the same attack.
Unveiled Play. After the attack resolves, spend 1 Libido to gain temporary hit points equal to your Wisdom modifier + PB. You can do so once per turn. They disappear when this Wild Shape ends.
Moonheat Ferocity
6th-Level Circle of Rut Feature
Your attacks in Wild Shape count as magical for overcoming resistance and immunity to nonmagical attacks and damage. While Instinct Surge is active, when a creature you can see misses you with an attack, you may use your reaction to move up to half your speed without provoking opportunity attacks. Once per long rest, while transformed, you may use a bonus action to assume another eligible beast form without spending a Wild Shape use. Keep your current beast hit points, capped at the new form’s maximum; this change restores no hit points and does not restart your Wild Shape or Instinct Surge duration.
Veiled Play. When you experience Rebirth in Wild Shape, you may use your reaction after resolving it to make this change of form, spending the same once-per-long-rest use. This is not an additional use, and Rebirth alone does not end Wild Shape.
Unveiled Play. When you make this change, you may spend 1 Libido to move up to half the new form’s speed without provoking opportunity attacks. Resolve the movement after the transformation.
Sacred Rapture Shift
10th-Level Circle of Rut Feature
While in Wild Shape, you have advantage on saving throws against being frightened. You can communicate simple ideas through posture, sound, and movement to willing creatures within 30 feet that can see or hear you and understand a language; this does not supply spell components. Sacred Aspects. Whenever you enter Wild Shape, choose one aspect until that transformation ends: Predator — once per turn when Answer the Season adds damage to an attack against a creature at or below half its hit point maximum, add PB to that damage; Guardian Nest — when an ally within 10 feet is hit by an attack, use your reaction to add 2 to its AC against that attack, potentially causing it to miss; Fertility Bloom — as a bonus action, grant one willing creature within 10 feet temporary hit points equal to your Wisdom modifier, lasting until your Wild Shape ends; Chase — ignore difficult terrain created by nonmagical plants; Courtship — gain advantage on Wisdom (Insight) checks to read visible social cues and Charisma (Performance) checks involving ceremonial displays. Courtship never establishes attraction or consent. Changing form with Moonheat Ferocity lets you choose a new aspect.
Veiled Play. While in Wild Shape, you may add 1d4 to an EROS save after rolling but before the outcome is declared. You can do so PB times per long rest. You choose restraint when the season would otherwise carry you onward.
Unveiled Play. When you use that 1d4, you may spend 1 Libido to extend the same bonus to one willing creature within 30 feet making an EROS save against the same effect. It must be able to see or hear you.
Avatar of the Rutting Moon
14th-Level Circle of Rut Feature
Once per long rest, when you enter Wild Shape, choose to embody the Rutting Moon for that transformation, up to 1 minute. Your speeds increase by 10 feet and Answer the Season requires only 10 feet of movement. This speed increase does not stack with Instinct Surge’s speed increase. When you use Answer the Season’s bonus damage, one willing ally within 30 feet that can see you may use its reaction to move up to half its speed without provoking opportunity attacks. At the start of this embodiment, choose a second Sacred Aspect; both aspects apply for its duration. This represents the season’s contest, shelter, flourishing, and release held in conscious balance.
Veiled Play. Once during this embodiment, immediately before your Rebirth resolves, you may prevent the one level of exhaustion it would give you. All other canonical costs and healing remain. This does not replenish Moonheat Ferocity.
Unveiled Play. When the embodiment begins, you may spend 1 Libido to grant yourself and up to PB willing creatures within 30 feet temporary hit points equal to your Verdant Keeper level. These last 1 minute.
Rituals of the Living Circle
Rites of the Quickening. During a 10-minute observance, lead a contest dance, bless a nesting place, prepare a cooling herbal infusion, or witness a freely offered courtship token. Choose one willing participant to gain advantage on its next Wisdom (Survival) check to track a beast or find a safe natural route, or its next Charisma (Performance) check during a ceremonial display, within 1 hour. Choose which benefit when the rite ends. You can grant this benefit PB times per long rest. In Veiled play, the participant may gain or reduce Arousal by 1, once per long rest per creature. Fertility blessings promise care rather than conception; the rite requires no intimate activity.
At the Table
At level 6, you become a CR 2 beast as a bonus action and choose to activate Instinct Surge. Its speed and sharpened senses help you pursue an opponent through the clearing. After moving 20 feet, you hit and use Answer the Season. In Veiled play, you may accept 1 Arousal; at 3 or more Arousal before the attack, you may instead trade its bonus damage for safe movement. If an attack later misses you, Moonheat Ferocity offers a reaction to reposition. At level 10, your chosen Sacred Aspect distinguishes a contesting predator from a nest guardian or ritual celebrant.
Rules boundaries: Temporary hit points do not stack. No Circle feature creates a new core resource, replenishes its own uses, or triggers itself recursively. Each named feature’s use limit applies across all forms and all creatures. These options have received a rules and compatibility review; encounter playtesting remains necessary.
Deity Alignment
Keepers of Rut may find kinship with Ulvexa the Wild Heat through instinct and seasonal urgency, or Velyssara through life and transformation. These are possible personal affinities rather than requirements of worship. Their tradition preserves conscious choice within the rhythms of Fauna and the Living Circle.
Legacy Roots
Adapted from Druid Circle of Rutt in The Crimson Moon (pp. 98–104), with the Quickening and Amber-Musk Glade from The Amber-Musk Glade: The Quickening Season (pp. 6–14). Rut retains the current subclass spelling. Feature limits, Sacred Aspects, Arousal, Libido, and Rebirth interactions are Second Bloom conversions; the legacy spendable Desire resource is not used.
