The Devourer Beyond the Chrysalis. A Hungermaw is a great-bodied Demon whose living Gelkin substance has undergone the rare metamorphosis of the Chrysalis, emerging with an enormous reservoir abdomen, a powerful frame and a capacity to consume far beyond ordinary need. Its first impression is overwhelming mass: deep folds of living tissue, heavy shoulders, thick arms, a skull-like face, and slow-moving gold within translucent seams. To call it a Devourer is understandable, but this familiar name does not explain what it seeks.
A Hungermaw may long for food, warmth, comfort, magical resonance, safety, treasured objects, companionship, or the certainty that what it values will not disappear. Some are greedy, some are generous, some are frightened of an emptiness no feast can repair. A creature of this morphotype can be a dangerous predator or a caretaker whose vast store of nourishment feeds others through a hard winter. Its body is not a moral judgment. Its choices are its own.
Origin: The Hunger Current and Chrysalis
The Gelkin are living people awakened from accumulated feeling and mutable substance. Among their recognized Emotional Currents, Hunger arises around famine, desperate need, want, and the fear of having too little. Most Gelkin never become Demons. A Hungermaw is one possible result of the exceptional Chrysalis path, when an existing Gelkin’s material and identity undergo profound organic reorganization.
The Hunger Current may have shaped the individual’s early life, but it does not mechanically determine their future, force a metamorphosis, or define their alignment. A Gelkin once nourished by a compassionate community might emerge as a Hungermaw who protects storehouses for everyone. Another, shaped by long deprivation, might guard each morsel as though starvation were always a night away. The original person’s memories, loyalties, names, and fears may continue beyond the Chrysalis.
A Hungermaw has no Imp stage, no infernal promotion, and no innate right to claim Whispers or enforce Devil contracts. It is a transformed Gelkin, not a newly manifested Devil or an undead creature assembled from the remains of other beings.

Appearance and Metamorphic Anatomy
Mature Hungermaws are commonly eight to ten feet tall, with a dramatically broad, overweight silhouette and an abdomen that hangs forward and low beneath its own mass. The body is genuinely large and soft in its reservoir regions, not simply an armored brute with a thick waist. Thick shoulders and powerful arms counterbalance the belly; sturdy legs and broad gripping feet support its weight. A Hungermaw has exactly two arms, two legs and one head. It has no wings or innate flying speed.
Its face often resembles an ancient bovine skull, but the pale material is living Chrysalis-grown facial plating, not bare dead bone. A broad jaw, deep-set eyes, heavy ridges and paired sweeping horns can make the profile terrifying without making the creature a minotaur or a corpse. Horn shape and exact facial proportions vary between individuals. The mouth is singular; the belly is a living reservoir, not a second mouth.
Across the abdomen, neck, chest and sides, dense organic tissue yields to softly translucent seams through which a slow golden-amber substance moves. Those seams are traces of Gelkin-derived mutable matter. When the Hungermaw feeds, is distressed, or draws upon its supernatural reserves, a warm glow thickens beneath its skin. Small rivulets of viscous gold may collect around its lips or escape from stressed seams. This is not rotten flesh, exposed organs, or spilled blood; it is an expression of the creature’s transformed living medium.
Despite its bulk, the Hungermaw is no helpless mound of flesh. Its massive hands are articulate, capable of sheltering a fragile object or seizing an enemy. It moves with deliberate weight, often bracing its feet and shifting its abdomen before advancing. Hungermaws do not universally reek of decay, rot food in their presence, attract flies, or carry cleavers. Those horrors belong to particular stories of corruption and spoilage, not the underlying species.
Behavior, Habitats and Relationships
Hungermaws may haunt granaries, abandoned storehouses, temple kitchens, caravan depots, overflowing market cellars or remote caves where they can shelter their collected resources. Others dwell near orchards, communal baths, or familiar Gelkin sanctuaries. Such places offer both nourishment and the memories associated with it; they are not mandatory lairs. Their overwhelming bodies make concealment difficult, so some cultivate reputations as guardians, unusual traders, or protectors of plentiful places.
A Hungermaw may collect things it cannot digest, such as books, warm blankets, old letters or precious keepsakes, because its desire concerns security rather than literal appetite. Some build elaborate systems of sharing and preservation. Others restrict access to supplies in ways that inadvertently create the scarcity they fear. It can converse, bargain, accept comfort or refuse an offer. Neither hunger nor a monstrous appearance makes the creature mindless.
Unlike creatures that magically spoil whatever they approach, an ordinary Hungermaw does not destroy a field merely by standing in it. Its choices, appetite, and particular powers create the danger. A party may overcome it by offering a stable source of food, demonstrating that abundance can be renewed, recovering a stolen cache, or fighting when the Hungermaw refuses to release what belongs to others.
The Desire Engine
- Want: Enough. Food, warmth, shelter, affection, stored magical energy, or the certainty that tomorrow will not be empty. What counts as enough differs from individual to individual.
- Trigger: A reminder of famine, a threatened supply, a visible feast, withheld necessities, abundance being wasted, or someone else left hungry while provisions are locked away.
- Expression: Protective clutching, collecting, bargaining, swallowing, hoarding, guarding, a reservoir belly brightening with inner gold, or a grasp that will not release its prize. The creature may seek to nourish others or keep everything for itself.
- Resolution: A genuine meal, a dependable supply, equitable sharing, the recovery of a cherished object, proof of safety, a chosen act of restraint, or separation by force. A Hungermaw’s desire can be addressed without requiring another character to surrender personal autonomy.

Traits
Living Reservoir. The Hungermaw’s enormous abdomen is an organic store of Gelkin-derived material. It is not removable armor, a separate creature, or a hidden mouth. The Hungermaw can carry up to twice the normal amount of food and drink for its size without this load counting against its carrying capacity. Other carried objects follow the ordinary encumbrance rules.
Heavy-Bodied. The Hungermaw has advantage on Strength saving throws against being pushed or knocked prone while it is touching the ground. It cannot use this trait while incapacitated.
Scent of Sustenance. The Hungermaw has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks involving the smell of food, fresh water, or organic nourishment within 60 feet. This sense does not identify magical properties, bypass sealed airtight containers, or reveal a creature’s hidden feelings.
Actions
Multiattack. The Hungermaw makes two Reservoir Grasp attacks.
Reservoir Grasp. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (2d8 + 5) bludgeoning damage. If the target is a Large or smaller creature, the Hungermaw can grapple it (escape DC 16). The Hungermaw can grapple only one creature at a time with this trait, and while it holds that creature it cannot use the grasping hand to attack another target.
Overflow of Abundance (Recharge 5–6). The Hungermaw releases a pressurized rush of luminous, viscous matter in a 15-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw, taking 21 (6d6) acid damage on a failed save, or half as much on a successful one. The matter coats the ground in the cone, making it difficult terrain until the end of the Hungermaw’s next turn. The effect is a surge of living reservoir substance, not automatically rotten food or disease.
The Empty Table (Recharge 5–6). The Hungermaw chooses one creature it can see within 30 feet that can hear it. A low resonant demand awakens the target’s sense that something necessary is slipping away. Resolve the effect using the campaign’s chosen play mode:
- Classic Play: The target must succeed on a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw or be unable to take reactions until the start of its next turn. The target remains free to decide what it wants and what it does.
- Veiled Play: The target makes a DC 15 EROSave. On a failure, a Composed target becomes Stirred. A target already Stirred by this Hungermaw becomes Overwhelmed; resolve The Moment of Want below, then end that specific Desire condition. Success leaves its state unchanged.
- Unveiled Play: The target makes a DC 15 EROSave. On a failure, it gains 1 Arousal and cannot take reactions until the start of its next turn. A success inflicts neither effect. In this encounter Arousal can represent physical urgency, apprehension, intense longing, or pressure rather than sexual excitement.
The Empty Table cannot compel eating, physical intimacy, disclosure of a private need, a bargain, or a transfer of property. No target loses the ability to refuse an offer because this feature succeeds.
Bonus Actions
Devour Abundance. If at least 1 pound of readily edible, unattended food or organic nourishment is within the Hungermaw’s reach, it can consume that supply to gain 10 temporary hit points. It can use this bonus action at most once on each of its turns. It cannot use this trait to take food carried by another creature without first gaining possession of it.
Ravenous Bite. The Hungermaw makes a melee weapon attack (+8 to hit) against one creature grappled by it within 5 feet. Hit: 16 (2d10 + 5) piercing damage, and the Hungermaw regains hit points equal to half the damage dealt, to a maximum of 10. The Hungermaw may choose not to use this ability against a restrained guest, ally, or helpless creature.
Reactions
Clutch What Remains. When a creature within 5 feet of the Hungermaw tries to move a visible unattended object that the Hungermaw could reach, the Hungermaw can move up to 5 feet toward the object without provoking opportunity attacks from that creature. This movement does not prevent the creature from taking the object and cannot pass through other creatures or solid obstacles.
Mechanics of Desire
Classic Play
Use the ordinary 5e profile with the Classic Play version of The Empty Table. No Arousal or Libido track is used. The Desire Engine still matters: a party that recognizes what the Hungermaw needs may negotiate a supply, reveal deliberate hoarding, or show that the creature’s storehouse is no longer secure.
Veiled Play
Composed → Stirred → Overwhelmed. The Empty Table advances the target’s Desire state when it fails the listed EROSave. A successful save does not regress that state. When Overwhelmed is reached, resolve the culmination and then end this specific Desire condition.
The Moment of Want. The target cannot take reactions until the start of its next turn and has disadvantage on the next Wisdom (Insight) or Charisma check it makes before the end of that turn to conceal an immediate concern about scarcity or need. It is never forced to confess, accept a gift, eat, or reciprocate any feeling. A voluntary refusal, act of sharing, or withdrawal can resolve the moment in the fiction.
Unveiled Play
The Hungermaw uses the published Arousal track (0–6), Desire DC 15, EROSaves, and maximum Libido 4. The track may represent appetite, pressure, fixation, and other forms of overwhelming need without turning the encounter into sexual play. Insatiable Resonance (Unveiled Only): Once on its turn, when a creature fails an EROSave caused by The Empty Table, the Hungermaw may spend 1 Libido to make that creature gain 1 additional Arousal. Observe the standard per-turn Arousal limit. At Arousal 6, resolve Climax and any applicable Depletion under the published Mechanics of Desire.
Consuming food, accruing Arousal, or resolving an encounter does not automatically create Whispers. The Hungermaw has no inherent Pathos-Toll or infernal contract authority. All play modes remain subject to adult consent, table boundaries, and Scene Authority; no scene requires sexual interpretation.
Using Hungermaws in Play
A hostile Hungermaw prefers to fight where provisions, narrow passages, and sturdy walls give it leverage. It uses Reservoir Grasp to hold a close opponent, applies Ravenous Bite only when cornered or committed to violence, and expels its luminous stores with Overflow of Abundance when surrounded. It may instead break contact to seize a threatened supply, withdraw into a storehouse, or bargain when a real opportunity for stability is offered.
Encounter seed: The Sealed Granary. A village’s winter grain is locked behind the magistrate’s seal while nearby families go hungry. At night an enormous horned figure begins tearing apart the granary doors. The Hungermaw was once a Gelkin who lived through an earlier famine. The adventurers can protect the building, uncover the hoarding, negotiate a rationing agreement, or confront a creature whose fear of scarcity is about to make everything worse.
Encounter seed: A Feast for the Forgotten. Strange golden trails lead to a ruined bathhouse where a creature has been collecting warm blankets, sweet breads, and abandoned gifts. Its immense belly makes it appear gluttonous, but it is trying to prepare a safe place for refugees who have not yet arrived. Someone has begun stealing from its stores, and a hungry settlement blames the Demon.
Individual Variation. A Hungermaw’s size, horn curve, coloration, facial plates, and reservoir markings may vary widely. Some carry reassuring warmth, others frightful weight and sharp hunger. The morphotype remains wingless, strongly grounded, and rooted in Gelkin Chrysalis metamorphosis rather than Devil ancestry. Exceptional individuals may have different combat abilities, vocations, and attachments.
Kaestra Catalogue Note
The belly troubled the villagers more than its horns. They called it a storehouse of stolen meals, yet when I watched the amber seams beneath the skin, I could see no grain, only the slow turning of living substance. It placed one hand on an empty sack, and the light beneath its ribs brightened. Later, when the children were fed, that same hand opened without hesitation. I have learned to examine the reach of a creature’s fingers before deciding what it means to hunger.
