Stillheart — Way of the Unbroken Breath

“Let the world rise around you. Keep one breath your own.”

Lore Overview

The Unbroken Breath teaches that restraint is an active art. Its practitioners stand within the storm without pretending the storm is absent. Each inhalation acknowledges a burden; each exhalation chooses how much longer it can be carried. Their endurance is a promise of presence, never an obligation to suffer.

A defender and endurance specialist who commits to Patient Defense and sustains a measured stance. Its Desire identity is containment: retain Arousal for a carefully bounded defensive benefit, spend Libido to extend composure to others, and use Climax to protect the next breath rather than undo the previous cost.

Practitioners serve as patient witnesses, steadfast companions, and keepers of pauses in difficult negotiations. Their discipline helps them remain present with another person’s distress while leaving that person free to speak, leave, or refuse comfort.

Using This Tradition

This Monastic Tradition grants features at Stillheart levels 3, 6, 11, and 17. It uses your existing Ki Points, Martial Arts die, and Ki Save DC = 8 + your Proficiency Bonus + your Wisdom modifier. PB means Proficiency Bonus. All subclass combat features require no armor and no shield.

Modes of Play. Classic Play uses baseline features without Arousal or Libido; an EROSave becomes the named ordinary saving throw, or Wisdom if none is named. Veiled Play applies the listed Arousal gains to the creature’s existing total and resolves Climax at the threshold. A feature never assigns a lower Desire state or replaces accumulated Arousal with a descriptive label. Unveiled Play adds its expressly listed resource choices and tactical effects. Use only your current mode’s paragraph for each feature. An EROSave uses Constitution or Wisdom, chosen for each save, with proficiency only when proficient in the chosen saving throw. See the Mechanics of Desire for the underlying rules.

Desire Resolution. Add each listed Arousal gain to the current total; resolve the applicable Climax Effect when the total reaches 6. Arousal decreases only when a rule expressly reduces it or Climax resets it. Apply the normal per-turn gain limit and the stage effects used by the table’s mode. Resolve the Climax Effect, reduce Libido by 1 if Libido is being tracked, reset Arousal to 0, then resolve after-Climax features. Climax does not automatically heal or grant Exhaustion. Where Libido is tracked, 0 Libido causes Depletion rather than disabling class features; use the normal Depletion rules for further Climax. A Libido expenditure requires enough to pay, but may spend the final point.

Timing and limits: A subclass rider attached to Redirection adds no Reaction, does not count as another Redirection expression, and cannot repeat against the same triggering event. Perfect Redirection and Perfect Harmony do not duplicate subclass riders or bypass their limits. Movement requires an available Speed and cannot pass through occupied spaces or solid barriers unless another feature permits it.

Agency: These techniques never create attraction, agreement, disclosure, or consent. Willing participants can decline a benefit or stop a ritual. Arousal and emotional pressure can be described symbolically or resolved offscreen.

Measured Inhalation & Keeper of the Quiet

3rd-Level Way of the Unbroken Breath Feature

When you use Patient Defense, you gain temporary hit points equal to one roll of your Martial Arts die + your Wisdom modifier (minimum 1). These temporary hit points expire at the start of your next turn. While Patient Defense is active and your Speed is not 0, you have Advantage on saving throws against being pushed or knocked Prone.

Veiled Play. While Patient Defense is active, add 1 to your EROSaves. If you have 1–5 Arousal when you activate it, increase Measured Inhalation’s temporary hit points by PB. Your Arousal remains unchanged; this benefit neither lowers pressure nor prevents Climax.

Unveiled Play. If you have 1–4 Arousal when you use Patient Defense, increase its temporary hit points by PB. If you have 5 Arousal, increase them by twice PB instead. While Patient Defense is active, add 1 to your EROSaves. Apply all current Arousal stage effects normally, including stage 3’s first qualifying roll with Disadvantage, stage 4’s additional Arousal on a failed EROSave, and stage 5’s start-of-turn save against an ongoing Desire effect. Temporary hit points never stack, and changes in Arousal do not grant additional temporary hit points by themselves.

Keeper of the Quiet

Gain proficiency in Insight or Medicine; if you already have both, choose Religion. If already proficient in all three, gain proficiency with one artisan’s tool instead. You may use Wisdom instead of Charisma for a Persuasion check made to guide a willing creature through a breathing exercise. The exercise does not compel calm or end a condition by itself.

Ritual Practice

Your rite is a shared silence in which every participant controls their own breathing. At the end of a Short or Long Rest, lead up to PB willing creatures through 10 minutes of meditation. Choose yourself or one participant: once before its next rest, it may add your Martial Arts die to a Constitution ability check to endure an environmental hardship, after rolling but before the outcome is announced. This does not affect saving throws or Concentration. A creature can hold only one benefit from this rite.

Veiled Play. The chosen participant may use the rite’s single die on an EROSave instead of its Constitution ability check. Unveiled Play. Spend 1 Libido at the rite’s end to offer that same choice. The die remains a single use. The rite does not lower Arousal, remove Depletion, change rest recovery, or grant automatic ritual success.

Breath Beside Breath

6th-Level Way of the Unbroken Breath Feature

When you use Patient Defense, you can expend 1 additional Ki Point to shelter one willing creature you can see within 10 feet until the start of your next turn. The first time it takes damage during that duration, reduce that damage by one roll of your Martial Arts die + your Wisdom modifier (minimum 1). This requires no Reaction and applies after resistance or vulnerability.

Veiled Play. When you shelter a creature through Breath Beside Breath, you may voluntarily gain 1 Arousal to give it Advantage on its next EROSave before the start of your next turn. You must actually gain the point to grant the benefit. Add it to your existing total and resolve Climax if triggered. Unveiled Play. Instead, you may spend 1 Libido to grant that Advantage. If the creature succeeds on the save, you may voluntarily gain 1 Arousal; if you actually gain it, extend the unused damage reduction until the end of its next turn. Resolve the gain and any Climax normally. This cannot extend the benefit more than once.

The Necessary Exhalation

11th-Level Way of the Unbroken Breath Feature

When you use Patient Defense, choose yourself or one willing creature within 10 feet. That creature can immediately repeat one saving throw that an ongoing effect explicitly allows it to make at the end of its turn to end the Charmed or Frightened condition. Resolve the save against the original DC. You can grant this additional saving throw PB times per Long Rest, with no more than one use on a turn.

Veiled Play and Unveiled Play. Immediately after resolving your own Climax while conscious, you may enter Patient Defense without Ki or a Bonus Action. This is one free use per Short or Long Rest, shared across modes. Patient Defense ends at the start of your next turn as usual. Measured Inhalation checks your Arousal after the Climax reset, so the event does not grant its pressure-based temporary-hit-point bonus. You may use The Necessary Exhalation if a use remains. Depletion does not prevent this benefit.

Stillness Within the Storm

17th-Level Way of the Unbroken Breath Feature

As a Bonus Action, expend 4 Ki Points to enter perfect stillness for 1 minute. The state ends if you are Incapacitated. When you enter it and at the start of each subsequent turn, you gain Patient Defense without Ki or a Bonus Action, lasting until the start of your next turn. Measured Inhalation applies each time. During this state, Breath Beside Breath costs no additional Ki; its optional Unveiled expenditure still costs 1 Libido.

Veiled Play and Unveiled Play. Once per round during this state, when a willing creature within 10 feet would gain Arousal, you may use your Reaction to reduce that gain by 1 (minimum 0) and immediately gain 1 Arousal yourself. Add the transferred point to your existing total and resolve Climax if triggered. You must be able to gain that point under the normal per-turn cap; otherwise you cannot transfer it. Only that single point is redirected; the effect’s other consequences still apply. This is not Shelter, cannot be redirected again, and cannot be combined with Shelter against the same event.

At the Table

In Veiled Play, holding existing Arousal improves Patient Defense without reducing that pressure; sheltering a companion can add another point to your own total. In Unveiled Play, holding Arousal 5 increases the temporary-hit-point benefit but retains the cumulative stage risks. Whenever a gain reaches 6, resolve the applicable Climax Effect and normal resource changes, reset Arousal, then apply The Necessary Exhalation. Exhaustion is not an automatic Climax cost.

Deity Alignment

The Unbroken Breath may resonate with Nyzun through chosen discipline and trusted structure, Solynth through the strength of voluntary yielding, or Velyssara through compassionate presence. No deity demands endurance beyond a practitioner’s freely chosen boundaries. Worship is not required.
