Whisperblade

The blade moves only after the truth has opened the way.

Lore Overview

A Whisperblade waits through the boast, the trembling hand, the instant a guard looks toward the person they fear losing. Their weapon follows understanding. Choose this Calling to stalk dangerous foes, uncover real weaknesses, and decide whether to preserve composure or ride the gathering pressure into one decisive strike.

You are a precision striker and scout. Desire is a readable disturbance rather than a source of indiscriminate violence. Arousal sharpens your reading of an opponent at a cost to your own equilibrium; Libido fuels patient control. Outside battle, you study threats and protect vulnerable companions rather than treating every confidence as a weapon.

Study the Tremor

3rd-Level Subclass Feature

Gain proficiency in Stealth or Insight. If proficient in both, choose another Veilwalker skill. Once on each of your turns, when you hit a creature with a finesse or ranged weapon, you may exploit its Exposed Opening to qualify for Sneak Attack without advantage or an adjacent enemy. You still cannot have disadvantage, and all other Sneak Attack restrictions apply. The Opening closes after the attack.

Veiled Play. Once on each of your turns, before using Expose against a hostile creature, you may gain 1 Arousal to gain advantage on the check. Its threatening Echoes sharpen your reading while increasing your own pressure. Resolve any resulting Climax before the check.

Unveiled Play. When that hostile creature has at least 3 Arousal, you may instead add PB to the check without gaining Arousal. This does not disclose private desires or exact Arousal.

Echoes into Understanding

3rd-Level Subclass Feature

Veiled Play. Once per long rest, after your own Climax resolves, you may attempt Expose against one creature, object, location, or situation you can perceive within 60 feet without an action. Make the normal check; an Opening must actually exist after the scene changes. This grants no attack or Revelation activation.

Unveiled Play. Once per long rest, after your own Climax resolves, you may regain one expended use of Press the Fault. This grants no Expose attempt, attack, or Revelation activation. The two mode expressions share this once-per-long-rest use.

Press the Fault

3rd-Level Subclass Feature

When you deal Sneak Attack damage through Study the Tremor, you may prevent the target from taking reactions until the start of your next turn. Use this feature PB times per Long Rest.

Veiled Play. Instead of preventing reactions, force the target to make an EROSave. On failure it gains 1 Arousal; on success none. This expends the same use.

Unveiled Play. When Press the Fault prevents reactions, you may spend 1 Libido to reduce your own Arousal by 1. This does not force an EROSave or grant Arousal.

Ritual — Sheathe the Echo

3rd-Level Subclass Feature

During a Short Rest, spend 10 minutes sheathing and cleaning a weapon, breathing, or tracing the route of a safe retreat with one willing companion. Once per Long Rest, choose yourself or that companion to gain advantage on its next Stealth check before its next Long Rest.

Veiled Play. The chosen creature may reduce Arousal by 1. The ritual requires no disclosure and restores no Libido.

Unveiled Play. You may spend 1 Libido during the ritual to give its willing recipient advantage on its next EROSave before its next long rest. This does not reduce Arousal or restore Libido; each recipient can gain this benefit once per long rest.

Patient Edge

9th-Level Subclass Feature

When you successfully Hide using Cunning Action, gain advantage on your next Expose check before the end of your next turn against a creature from which you remain hidden. Hiding does not automatically create an Opening.

Veiled Play. Immediately after you exploit an Opening through Study the Tremor while hidden from the target at the time of the attack roll, you may reduce your Arousal by 1. You can do so PB times per Long Rest. Resolve hiding and the attack normally; this feature does not keep you hidden.

Unveiled Play. After successfully Hiding using Cunning Action, you may spend 1 Libido to reduce your Arousal by 1. You may make this expenditure once per turn.

Through the Broken Rhythm

13th-Level Subclass Feature

When Press the Fault prevents reactions, you may move up to half your speed immediately after the attack without provoking opportunity attacks from that target.

Veiled Play. When a hostile creature you can perceive within 60 feet resolves Climax, use your reaction to attempt Expose against it. Make the normal check and identify an Opening that actually exists after the Climax. Use this reaction PB times per Long Rest. It grants no attack or automatic success.

Unveiled Play. Once on each of your turns, after Study the Tremor exploits an Opening in a creature with at least 3 Arousal, you may spend 1 Libido to reduce your Arousal by 1 and move 10 feet without opportunity attacks from that creature. This grants no Expose attempt.

Silence Between Heartbeats

17th-Level Subclass Feature

Once on each of your turns during Revelation, when you exploit an Opening with Study the Tremor, move up to half your speed immediately after the attack without provoking opportunity attacks.

Veiled Play. Once per Long Rest, after your own Climax resolves, move up to half your speed without provoking opportunity attacks, requiring no action. You may then attempt Expose against one hostile creature you can perceive within 60 feet as part of this same benefit. Make the normal check; no attack is granted. Release becomes a new reading of the battlefield, rather than a generic damage burst.

Unveiled Play. Once on each of your turns during Revelation, after Study the Tremor deals Sneak Attack damage, you may spend 1 Libido to force that target to make an EROSave. On failure it gains 1 Arousal; on success none. This neither creates an Opening nor grants another attack.

Additional Information

Combat Identity

Precision striker and scout who waits for a genuine opening.

Desire Identity

Readable emotional disturbance supports patient timing rather than indiscriminate escalation.

Class Integration

You gain these features at Veilwalker levels 3rd, 9th, 13th, 17th. This subclass works through Echoes, Openings, Expose, and Revelation. Use the costs, triggers, limits, and recovery stated in the individual features and parent class.

Using This Calling. You gain features at Veilwalker levels 3, 9, 13, and 17. These are subclass features in addition to your class features. PB means proficiency bonus. A subclass save DC equals 8 + PB + your Wisdom modifier. Expose retains its normal bonus action, range, check, and requirement that an Opening already exist. An Opening closes when exploited; these features grant no extra Sneak Attacks or automatic critical hits.

Ritual and Social Use

Share weapon care and plans for retreat; observation supports safety without compelling confidences. The Ritual — Sheathe the Echo feature gives the applicable observance and its complete benefits; this guidance adds no additional ritual reward.

Example of Play

Expose an enemy’s distracted guard, then use Study the Tremor for one legal Sneak Attack. Press the Fault offers a limited choice: deny reactions for an immediate escape, or force an EROSave to raise pressure for later opportunities. In Unveiled Play, spending Libido can combine those outcomes after a failed save. You cannot farm willing companions for hostile Climax triggers; sparring, staged danger, and consenting ritual participants are not hostile creatures.

Additional Rules

Desire Rules and Table Modes.

At Climax, resolve the triggering Climax Effect, reduce Libido by 1 where Libido is tracked, reset Arousal to 0, and resolve applicable subclass triggers. These features do not grant automatic healing or automatic Exhaustion. At 0 Libido, apply the website’s Depletion rules; Depletion does not disable this Calling wholesale or prevent normal actions. You must have at least the Libido cost available to spend it. Further forced Climax while Depleted follows the core Exhaustion rules. A subclass Climax benefit does not grant a free activation or refund a use of the 17th-level Revelation feature. Revelation retains its published bonus-action activation, duration, and recharge.

Boundaries and Secrets. Emotional insight is not mind reading, proof of truth, consent, or permission to disclose private information. Arousal never establishes attraction or willingness. Players choose the details and framing of their characters’ experiences. Rituals can use conversation, silence, breathing, or symbolic gestures; intimate contact is never required.

Play Modes and Desire Resolution

Classic Play. Use the baseline feature and any expressly stated Classic alternative, without Arousal or Libido. A feature that only modifies Desire has no additional Classic effect.

Veiled Play. Use the baseline and the feature’s Veiled paragraph. Add each stated Arousal gain to the creature’s current total; never assign Composed, Stirred, or Overwhelmed or replace its existing pressure. Resolve Climax immediately at 6. Do not use the Unveiled paragraph.

Unveiled Play. Use the baseline and the feature’s Unveiled paragraph, together with the website’s full Arousal, Libido, Climax, and Depletion rules. Do not inherit the Veiled paragraph. A Libido expenditure requires enough Libido to pay it. Spending the final point does not disable benefits without a Libido cost.

Each feature retains its stated actions, targets, duration, resource costs, and recharge. Changing play modes restores no uses. A gain-dependent benefit requires the Arousal actually to be gained. Unless explicitly excepted, a creature gains at most 3 Arousal per turn; reductions cannot go below 0. Resolve Climax before continuing a feature or applying any after-Climax benefit: the applicable Climax Effect, 1 Libido loss where tracked, Arousal reset to 0, then applicable aftermath triggers. Healing and Exhaustion occur only when an applicable rule grants or imposes them. An EROSave is the creature’s choice of Constitution or Wisdom saving throw, including proficiency only if proficient in that save. Basic Desire Actions retain their one-per-round limit unless an explicit feature overrides it.

Unless a feature expressly states otherwise, this subclass’s EROSave DC is 8 + PB + your Wisdom modifier. PB means proficiency bonus.

Deity Alignment

This Calling requires no patron deity or religious affiliation. A practitioner may honor Velyssara through freely chosen connection and respect for personal agency, or follow another faith consistent with their own values. No subclass feature requires worship.
