Resonance Engineer

“Pleasure is a wave; the artisan decides how it travels.”
Lore Overview
Resonance Engineers build devices for sensation: responsive implements, wearable pleasure instruments, pulse chambers, and intricate mechanisms tuned to their user. A device can capture a willing user’s resonance, store it in a Spark-powered capacitor, and release it as a chosen wave. Their artistry makes pleasure and emotional intensity tangible, portable, and tactically useful.

Resonance Instruments
3rd-Level Relicwright Feature
Gain proficiency with tinker’s tools or another artisan’s tool if already proficient. During a long rest, build two Tiny pleasure instruments and one Tiny capacitor. The instruments may be handheld, worn, or placed; each user chooses its appearance, contact, and sensory expression. They have no autonomous actions, require no attunement, and do not use Imbued Creation slots. A user may pause or remove an instrument freely.
As an action, while holding the capacitor, expend 1 Spark to load it. It holds one charge, which lasts until discharged, replaced by a new load, or your next long rest. An expended Spark does not return to your supply. Breakthrough can load the capacitor without expending a Spark. You can activate its loaded charge using Resonant Release.
Veiled Play. When loading, one willing instrument user you can see within 30 feet may gain 1 Arousal; if the creature actually gains it, the charge becomes attuned. Unveiled Play. When loading, a willing instrument user within 30 feet may reduce its Arousal by 1 to attune the charge, or you may spend 1 Libido to attune it yourself. These options do not stack. An unattuned charge still functions.
Resonant Release
3rd-Level Relicwright Feature
As a bonus action while holding a loaded capacitor, release its charge and choose a point you can see within 30 feet. Choose one effect: Pulse: creatures of your choice in a 10-foot-radius sphere make a Strength save; on failure a creature is pushed 10 feet from the point, and on success it is unaffected. Caress: one willing creature in the sphere gains temporary hit points equal to 1d6 + your Intelligence modifier (minimum 1) for 1 minute. The charge is consumed; discharge expends no additional Spark.
Veiled Play. If the charge is attuned, one willing instrument user in the sphere may gain 1 Arousal to move 5 feet without provoking opportunity attacks. Unveiled Play. If the charge is attuned, one willing instrument user in the sphere may gain 1 Arousal to gain temporary hit points equal to your proficiency bonus for 1 minute. They do not stack with Caress. At level 5, Improved Spark overcharge when loading extends discharge range to 60 feet and Pulse’s push to 15 feet.
Tuning Ritual
3rd-Level Relicwright Feature
During a short or long rest, spend 10 minutes tuning an instrument with a willing user. The user chooses its signal and a preferred sensory expression. Until their next long rest, the user can activate its harmless signal as a bonus action; it is perceptible to you within 30 feet if you can see or hear it. It communicates only an agreed message and conveys no thoughts.
Veiled Play. At the rite’s end, the user may gain 1 Arousal; if it does, it can add 1d4 to one EROSave before its next long rest. Unveiled Play. At the rite’s end, the user may spend 1 Libido to reduce Arousal by 1. A creature receives a mechanical benefit from this rite once per long rest.
Feedback Regulator
7th-Level Relicwright Feature
When an instrument user you can see within 30 feet fails a Constitution or Wisdom saving throw, including an EROSave, use your reaction and expend 1 Spark to add 1d6 to the roll, potentially changing failure to success.
Veiled Play. If the user agrees and the roll becomes a success, it may gain 1 Arousal to move 5 feet without provoking opportunity attacks. Unveiled Play. When using this reaction, you may spend 1 Libido to let the willing user reduce Arousal by 1.
Echo of Release
11th-Level Relicwright Feature
Once per long rest, after you or an instrument user you can see within 30 feet resolves Climax, you may use your reaction to load an empty capacitor without expending a Spark. This charge is attuned, grants one normal discharge, and cannot be converted into a Spark. It does not trigger Spark Recovery. Your own Climax still activates Breakthrough under its normal rules.
Your Pulse may now pull failed-save targets up to 10 feet toward the point instead of pushing them; choose push or pull for the whole pulse before saves. A creature cannot finish in an occupied space.
Unveiled Play. When loading an echo, you may spend 1 Libido to let one willing instrument user you can see within 30 feet reduce Arousal by 1.
Harmonic Array
15th-Level Relicwright Feature
Once per long rest, when you discharge, create two release spheres at different visible points within range and choose Pulse or Caress for each sphere. A creature in both can be affected by only one sphere, chosen by you; it makes at most one save and is moved at most once. Each Caress sphere can protect one willing creature. Both effects consume the same charge.
Veiled Play. If the charge is attuned, up to two willing instrument users across the spheres may each gain 1 Arousal to move 5 feet without provoking opportunity attacks. Unveiled Play. If the charge is attuned, you may spend 1 Libido to let up to your proficiency bonus willing instrument users across the spheres each reduce Arousal by 1, instead of granting the attuned-charge benefit of Resonant Release. Each creature benefits once.
Additional Information
Combat Identity
A technical controller and support inventor whose instruments separate preparation from release. Load the capacitor with an action, then discharge it with a bonus action for displacement or protection. Feedback Regulator can rescue a failed saving throw, while Echo of Release and Harmonic Array extend the usefulness of carefully timed resonance without creating an autonomous companion.
Desire Identity
Arousal is resonance offered by a willing instrument user; Libido is the endurance committed to attunement or regulation. The capacitor stores one mechanical charge, not a second Arousal track or a pool of recoverable Sparks. At 11th level, Echo of Release captures the aftermath of a qualifying Climax as one attuned charge. Breakthrough remains your separate, limited opportunity for a Spark-free activation.
Class Integration
Choose this Inventor Specialty at Relicwright level 3. It grants features at levels 3, 7, 11, and 15 and uses your existing Sparks, spell save DC, and Breakthrough. It does not add another specialty or replace your spellcasting, Sparkcraft, or Imbued Creations.
Spark Recovery. In Veiled Play, your first Spark expenditure on a Relicwright feature during an encounter gives you 1 Arousal after that feature resolves. In Unveiled Play, this occurs once per turn. Apply the feature’s selected play-mode effects separately; spending more than one Spark does not multiply Spark Recovery’s gain.
Breakthrough. After resolving your own Climax, the next Relicwright feature you activate that normally costs 1 Spark costs 0 Sparks until the end of your next turn, provided Breakthrough’s once-per-long-rest benefit is available. All other conditions and costs remain. Apply Breakthrough’s selected play-mode benefit from the Relicwright class. No Spark is spent, so Spark Recovery does not trigger. A specialty’s separate release benefit does not grant another Breakthrough use.
Ritual and Social Use
Tuning Ritual establishes a user’s preferred expression and an agreed signal before the instrument is used. In a workshop, sanctuary, or expedition camp, the engineer can demonstrate how to pause the apparatus and choose a signal that communicates a particular need. The signal is neither telepathy nor an emotional diagnosis. Only the ritual’s listed benefits apply, and each user retains control over contact and participation.
Example of Play
At 3rd level, hold the capacitor and use your action to spend 1 Spark and load it. In Veiled Play, a willing instrument user within 30 feet may gain 1 Arousal to attune the charge. Resolve your separate Spark Recovery gain after loading, if eligible. You can then use your bonus action to discharge Pulse at a visible point within 30 feet, choosing which creatures in its sphere must make the Strength save.
The discharge consumes the stored charge and spends no additional Spark, so it does not trigger Spark Recovery again. If the charge is attuned, an eligible willing instrument user in the sphere may use the selected play mode’s additional benefit. At 11th level, a qualifying Climax can instead let Echo of Release load an empty capacitor with your reaction once per long rest; that free charge is not a refunded Spark.
Additional Rules
Your two instruments and capacitor are reusable, require no attunement, and occupy no Imbued Creation slots. A loaded capacitor holds only one charge; loading again replaces the previous charge rather than adding another. That charge ends when discharged, replaced, or at your next long rest. Instruments have no actions of their own, and a user can pause or remove one freely.
From 5th level, Improved Spark can overcharge loading by spending one of the class feature’s limited overcharge uses, producing the range and push improvements stated in Resonant Release. Harmonic Array consumes a single charge for both spheres; an overlapping creature is affected by only one sphere. Echo of Release and Feedback Regulator both use your reaction, so they cannot both be used before that reaction is available again.
Unless a feature names another save, use your Relicwright spell save DC: 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Intelligence modifier. Build or prepare the reusable apparatus with appropriate proficient artisan’s tools or tinker’s tools during a long rest. Cosmetic description grants no unlisted range, target, damage, duration, or benefit.
Play Modes and Desire Resolution
Use the current Mechanics of Desire for the shared limits and resolution. A creature normally gains at most 3 Arousal during one turn unless a rule explicitly provides an exception. A benefit conditional on gaining or reducing Arousal requires that change actually to occur, and reductions cannot take the total below 0. An EROSave uses Constitution or Wisdom as allowed by the shared rules, with proficiency only when proficient in the chosen saving throw.
At 6 Arousal, resolve the applicable Climax Effect, reduce Libido by 1 where tracked, reset Arousal to 0, and then resolve eligible aftermath features. Healing, Exhaustion, and Spark recovery occur only when an applicable rule grants or imposes them. Pay any optional post-Climax Libido cost after the normal Libido loss. Changing play modes restores no expended uses, charges, reactions, or resources.
Your creations cannot determine attraction, consent, identity, or lasting feelings. A willing participant can stop using a preparation, transformation, or device as its feature permits. Agree on the sensory description; emotional or magical resonance and veiled description use the same mechanics.
- Classic Play. Use baseline effects and any expressly stated Classic alternative without tracking Arousal or Libido. A feature that only responds to or changes Desire supplies no extra Classic benefit.
- Veiled Play. Use the baseline feature and its Veiled option. Add each stated Arousal gain to the creature’s current total; apply an expressly stated reduction numerically. Features do not assign or replace a Desire state. If a gain reaches 6 Arousal, resolve Climax immediately before continuing. Do not also apply the Unveiled option.
- Unveiled Play. Use the baseline feature and its Unveiled option, plus any effect explicitly labeled for both modes. The two mode-specific alternatives do not stack. Spend Libido only when the feature permits it and you have enough to pay the cost; a feature without a Libido cost remains available subject to its normal requirements.
Deity Alignment
Resonance Engineers may honor Velyssara through the creation of instruments for chosen pleasure, or Delavira through the deliberate interval between gathering pressure and releasing it. These affinities impose no religious requirement. The instrument’s user chooses its appearance, contact, and sensory expression; its engineering provides only the effects written in the features.
