School of Living Equations

A heart is no constant. Begin the proof again.

Lore Overview

Living Equations treats emotion as a changing variable rather than an error. Choose this school to become an attentive scholar whose calculations adapt when companions gather pressure or find release.

Living Equations specializes in Erothaumaturgy: affection, empathy, shared vitality, and renewal expressed as adaptive proofs. Its wards remain mathematical structures, but their changing variables are living relationships and freely offered care.

Adaptive support and protection. You observe a subject, then revise their defenses when their condition changes. Arousal becomes information, Libido purchases a deliberate revision, and Climax supplies a moment to rewrite the equation.

Erothaumaturgic Research

2nd-Level Subclass Feature

You specialize in Erothaumaturgy. The following spells are additional Sigilwright spell-list options for you through this subclass: Heartward Thread, Quill of Witness, Lantern of Joined Courage. This is an explicit access exception for these named spells only, including those whose printed Available Classes omit Sigilwright.

These spells are not automatically known, added to your spellbook, or always prepared. Learn them using your normal two spells per Sigilwright level or copy a discovered formula using the normal time and gold costs. You must have slots of the spell’s level before learning it, then prepare and cast it normally using Intelligence. This feature grants no free castings, additional spells learned, or additional prepared spells. Your ordinary access to other eligible Grimoire and 2014 Wizard spells is unchanged.

A qualifying Erothaumaturgy spell is a spell you cast as a Sigilwright spell with that discipline explicitly printed in its rules. A blended spell qualifies if it includes Erothaumaturgy, but counts as only one casting. Theme, traditional school, patron, and visual description alone do not assign the discipline. This tradition does not restrict you to its favored discipline.

Pearl Lunar Corollary (Optional)

2nd-Level Research Rider; requires Lunar Resonance. When you invoke Lunar Resonance or High Resonance on a Sigilwright spell of 1st level or higher tagged Erothaumaturgy, after that spell and its lunar effects (including any overchanneling EROSave and resulting Climax) resolve, you may expend one of your remaining Variable Ward uses to create a Variable Ward without spending a Bonus Action. Place it on yourself, or on one willing creature actually affected by the triggering spell that you can see within 30 feet. The ward uses its ordinary 1-minute duration, Reaction-based protection, distance and visibility limits, and single-active-ward restriction; any previous ward ends. A new ward does not retroactively reduce damage from the triggering spell. If you have no Variable Ward uses remaining or cannot validly create a ward, this rider provides no benefit. This represents Pearl’s restorative equation resolved into a protective proof.

Limits. This rider is part of the Erothaumaturgy Research feature and works only when your group uses the Lunar Resonance rules and you actually spend that same once-per-Long-Rest lunar use on Pearl. Using High Resonance instead of its ordinary benefit also qualifies but is never a second lunar activation. It grants no additional spell known, preparation, spell slot, ward/diagram/mark use, or independent Arousal. Resolve all actual Arousal, EROSaves, Climax and Perfection as instructed by your Sigilwright class and the campaign’s play mode. It works with any matching phase and is not restricted to a Full Moon.

Variable Ward

2nd-Level Subclass Feature

You gain proficiency in Insight, or Investigation if you already have Insight. As a Bonus Action, place a visible ward on yourself or one willing creature you can see within 30 feet. It lasts 1 minute, ends if you are incapacitated, and ends early if you ward another creature. You can create it PB times per Long Rest. While the warded creature is within 30 feet and visible to you, when it takes damage you can use your Reaction to reduce that damage by 1d6 + your Intelligence modifier (minimum reduction 1).

Living Revision

2nd-Level Subclass Feature

This technique modifies Variable Ward. Use the expression for your table’s chosen play mode; it has no additional Classic Play effect.

Veiled Play. Once on your turn after a levelled Sigilwright spell, gain 1 Arousal to let the ward’s bearer move 5 feet without Opportunity Attacks. If Summation already granted Arousal from that spell, require no second gain. Resolve Climax before moving.

Unveiled Play. When creating the ward, spend 1 Libido to reduce its willing bearer’s Arousal by 1 and increase the ward’s next damage reduction by your Intelligence modifier (minimum 1). The extra reduction is used once.

Ritual and Social Identity

2nd-Level Subclass Feature

During a 10-minute voluntary study with one participant, record a changing resonance in your spellbook. Once per Long Rest, give that participant Advantage on one Arcana or Insight check during the next hour concerning a specific magical or emotional disturbance you both observed. This neither reads thoughts nor proves what another person feels. The ritual requires no touch or disclosure. Practitioners serve as ritual observers, counselors in magical crises, and investigators of unstable enchantments.

Veiled Play. When the study ends, you may gain 1 Arousal to give its willing participant advantage on its next EROSave within 1 hour.

Unveiled Play. When the study ends, you may spend 1 Libido to let its willing participant reduce Arousal by 1. This creates no ward, Summation trigger, or Perfection.

Responsive Proof

6th-Level Subclass Feature

Your Variable Ward reduction becomes 2d6 + your Intelligence modifier. When its bearer fails a saving throw, you may instead use your Reaction to add 1d4 to that roll, potentially changing the outcome; this ends the ward. Decide after failure is announced but before effects resolve. Automatically failed saves cannot be modified.

Veiled Play. Once per ward after Greater Summation or Summation Mastery prevents an Arousal gain, move the ward to a willing creature within 30 feet without an action, keeping its remaining duration.

Unveiled Play. When the ward’s bearer fails an EROSave, you may spend 1 Libido along with Responsive Proof’s Reaction to use a d6 instead of d4 on that save. The ward still ends, and this is one modification of the roll.

Erothaumaturgic Recalculation. Once per ward, immediately after you finish casting a Sigilwright spell of 1st level or higher bearing the Erothaumaturgy discipline, you may move the active ward to one willing creature affected by that spell whom you can see within 30 feet. No action is required; retain the ward’s remaining duration and expended once-per-ward benefits. The spell must actually affect the recipient; copying a promise or creating an object does not qualify as affecting the person who later uses it.

Equation of Release

10th-Level Subclass Feature

Once per Long Rest in Classic Play, when you cast a Sigilwright spell using a spell slot, you may create Variable Ward without expending a use or an action.

Veiled Play. On your own Climax that grants Perfection, use the feature’s once-per-Long-Rest ward creation without an action. The bearer gains temporary hit points equal to your Sigilwright level for the ward’s duration.

Unveiled Play. After casting your Perfected spell, spend 1 Libido and the feature’s once-per-Long-Rest use to create a ward without an action or ordinary use expenditure. Its willing bearer may reduce Arousal by 2. No extra Perfected spell is granted.

Perfected Renewal. When an Erothaumaturgy spell is the Perfected spell associated with Equation of Release, the ward created by that use grants its bearer temporary hit points equal to your Intelligence modifier (minimum 1), lasting until the ward ends. In Veiled Play this does not add to the larger temporary-hit-point grant; choose which pool to retain. In Unveiled Play apply this when the ward is created after the spell, paying that mode’s normal costs.

Convergent Solution

14th-Level Subclass Feature

Your ward’s damage reduction becomes 3d6 + your Intelligence modifier. Once during each ward, after reducing damage with it, its bearer may move 10 feet without provoking Opportunity Attacks.

Veiled Play. If you gained Arousal through Summation since the start of your previous turn, the ward’s once-per-ward movement may be 20 feet instead of 10.

Unveiled Play. Once per ward, after casting a Perfected spell, you may reduce your own Arousal by 1 to grant its bearer Advantage on its next EROSave before your next turn. You must actually reduce a point; this cannot undo the preceding Climax.

Additional Information

Combat Identity

Adaptive support scholar who revises protection as circumstances change.

Desire Identity

Arousal supplies changing information, Libido funds revisions, and release creates an opportunity to rewrite the equation.

Class Integration

Using This Tradition.

You gain these features at Sigilwright levels 2nd, 6th, 10th, 14th. This subclass works through Summation and Perfection. Use the costs, triggers, limits, and recovery stated in the individual features and parent class.

The live Mechanics of Desire and Sigilwright pages govern these features, subject to the creator’s numerical Veiled Play clarification here. PB means Proficiency Bonus. Subclass EROSave DC = 8 + PB + Intelligence modifier. An EROSave uses the target’s chosen Constitution or Wisdom saving throw, including proficiency only when proficient in that saving throw.

Ritual and Social Use

Observe and compare freely offered experiences without treating people as fixed variables. The Ritual and Social Identity feature gives the applicable observance and its complete benefits; this guidance adds no additional ritual reward.

Example of Play

Learn Heartward Thread through Erothaumaturgic Research and prepare it normally. Its Reaction competes with your ward’s Reaction; you cannot use both on the same damage event. At 6th level, casting it on a willing companion can transfer an existing ward to that companion. The first qualifying casting still grants only Summation’s normal Arousal; the spell’s own Unveiled enhancement is a separate optional gain with its own printed trigger.

Additional Rules

Table Preference.

Summation is understanding, not a spendable point pool. Its first leveled spell per encounter still grants only its normal 1 Arousal; subclass spellcasting triggers explicitly use that gain instead of duplicating it. Optional later gains represent deliberately accepting further magical instability. Features that prevent an Arousal increase do not count as having gained it. Resolve one reroll of a given save through Greater Summation or Summation Mastery; these subclass features add no rerolls or recovered uses. Arousal gains observe the website’s limit of 3 per turn. Pressure lost through a Climax is not preserved for threshold checks.
Only your own Climax grants your Perfection. Use the parent class’s mode-appropriate Perfection benefit and next-spell deadline, then apply subclass riders at their stated timing. Another creature’s Climax does not grant you Perfection. Resolve the applicable Climax Effect, reduce Libido by 1 where tracked, reset Arousal to 0, then check Depletion. These features grant no universal healing or automatic Exhaustion; use the current Climax Effect and Depletion rules.

Play Modes and Desire Resolution

Each feature retains its stated actions, targets, duration, resource costs, and recharge. Changing play modes restores no uses. A gain-dependent benefit requires the Arousal actually to be gained. Unless explicitly excepted, a creature gains at most 3 Arousal per turn; reductions cannot go below 0. Resolve Climax before continuing a feature or applying any after-Climax benefit: the applicable Climax Effect, 1 Libido loss where tracked, Arousal reset to 0, then applicable aftermath triggers. Healing and Exhaustion occur only when an applicable rule grants or imposes them. An EROSave is the creature’s choice of Constitution or Wisdom saving throw, including proficiency only if proficient in that save. Basic Desire Actions retain their one-per-round limit unless an explicit feature overrides it.

Unless a feature expressly states otherwise, this subclass’s EROSave DC is 8 + PB + your Intelligence modifier. PB means proficiency bonus.

  • Classic Play. Use the baseline feature and any expressly stated Classic alternative, without Arousal or Libido. A feature that only modifies Desire has no additional Classic effect.
  • Veiled Play. Use the baseline and the feature’s Veiled paragraph. Add each stated Arousal gain to the creature’s current total; never assign Composed, Stirred, or Overwhelmed or replace its existing pressure. Resolve Climax immediately at 6. Do not use the Unveiled paragraph.
  • Unveiled Play. Use the baseline and the feature’s Unveiled paragraph, together with the website’s full Arousal, Libido, Climax, and Depletion rules. Do not inherit the Veiled paragraph. A Libido expenditure requires enough Libido to pay it. Spending the final point does not disable benefits without a Libido cost.

Deity Alignment

Practitioners may find affinity with Zenthira through synchronization and freely chosen bonds, or Velyssara through the transformative power of living desire. These are possible devotional relationships, not requirements for entering the school.

Grimoire and discipline interactions. Traditional Fifth Edition schools remain unchanged. Discipline-specific riders above apply in all three play modes unless a mode is expressly named. Apply baseline spell text and only the chosen mode’s printed spell option; Veiled and Unveiled alternatives do not stack. A spell’s optional Arousal gain is separate from Summation’s first leveled casting trigger; apply each actual trigger once and respect the shared limit of 3 Arousal per turn. Cantrips never trigger Summation or the leveled-spell riders above, even when their own printed effects can grant Arousal. Summation is not spent. Perfection affects only its permitted rolls and deadlines; it does not automatically maximize a subclass ward’s reduction die or an Unseen Variable die. A later save made against a continuing spell does not count as casting it again. Optional Lunar Resonance remains separately limited by its own rules, with only one lunar benefit per casting.
